AmberELEC is a polished, feature-packed custom firmware for older Rockchip handhelds. It grew out of the EmuELEC and 351ELEC projects and offers a rich EmulationStation experience with strong emulator support, themes, and network features. For RK3326 and RK3566 devices, it is one of the most complete firmware options you can run, and a great alternative to ArkOS.
This guide explains which devices AmberELEC supports, how to flash it, and how to get your games and WiFi running. We frame all of this around playing games you already own and preserving your personal collection.

Is AmberELEC Right for Your Device
AmberELEC targets older Rockchip chips, not the newer Allwinner H700 Anbernic family. If you own one of these, it is a strong choice.
- Anbernic RG351P, RG351M, RG351V, RG351MP
- Anbernic RG353 series and RG503
- Powkiddy RGB10 Max, RGB30, and similar Rockchip devices
Check the official AmberELEC documentation for the exact image for your device. The wrong image will not boot.
AmberELEC vs ArkOS
✓ Pros
- • Rich EmulationStation experience with themes and box art
- • Strong emulator support out of the box, including many systems preconfigured
- • Active development and frequent updates
- • Good network features, including WiFi transfers and remote tools
- • Per-game settings and a friendly menu system
- • Large community with plenty of themes and guides
✗ Cons
- • Only for older Rockchip chips, not the newer H700 Anbernic devices
- • Heavier than minimal firmware, so boot is a little slower
- • More features means a slightly steeper learning curve than ArkOS
- • Like all firmware, you must match the exact image to your device
AmberELEC and ArkOS target similar hardware. ArkOS leans toward stability and simplicity. AmberELEC leans toward features and polish. Try both on separate cards and keep the one you prefer. For the bigger picture, our Linux vs Android handhelds guide explains the tradeoffs.
What You Need
- A compatible RK3326 or RK3566 handheld
- A microSD card, 32GB or larger
- A microSD card reader and a computer
- The AmberELEC image for your device
- A flashing tool such as Balena Etcher or Rufus
Step 1: Download the Correct Image
Go to the official AmberELEC site and download the image that matches your device. Double check the device name and chipset. Images are device-specific, and the wrong one will not boot.
Step 2: Flash the Card
Insert your microSD card into your computer. Open Balena Etcher, select the AmberELEC image, select your card, and flash it. This erases the card, so back up anything important first.
Step 3: First Boot
Put the card in your handheld and power on. The first boot takes longer than usual while AmberELEC expands the file system and sets up its partitions. When you reach the EmulationStation menu, you are up and running.
Step 4: Set Up WiFi
In the main menu, open the network settings, enable WiFi, and connect to your network. Note the IP address shown. AmberELEC supports network transfers and remote management, so this IP lets you copy games over your network. Some RK3326 devices need a WiFi dongle, so confirm your hardware supports it.
Step 5: Add Your Games
AmberELEC has a dedicated games partition with folders for each system. You can copy games to the card on your computer, or transfer them over the network once WiFi is set up. Place games in the matching system folders, such as snes or psx, and put BIOS files in the bios folder.
You supply all games and BIOS files from hardware you own. Our how to organize ROMs and BIOS files and how to transfer ROMs guides cover both.
Step 6: Scrape Box Art and Pick a Theme
AmberELEC supports scraping and a wide range of themes. Add box art through the built-in scraper or with Skraper on your computer. Our how to scrape box art guide walks through both. Then browse the included themes to set the look you like.
Troubleshooting
Device will not boot. You likely used the wrong image. Re-download the exact build for your device and chipset.
WiFi will not connect. Some devices need a supported dongle. Confirm your WiFi hardware works and is seated.
Games do not show up. Check that they are in the correct system folder, then refresh the game list or reboot.
Recommended Handhelds
AmberELEC shines on the devices it was built for. The
is a great RK3566 device with a lovely square screen. If you are buying new and want current H700 hardware instead, the is a strong pick, though it runs muOS or KNULLI rather than AmberELEC.For more firmware help, see our ArkOS setup guide, Batocera setup guide, and muOS vs KNULLI vs Onion OS comparison.
