August 2026 gave budget buyers a real decision. The Anbernic RG SP went on sale 5 August from $64.99. The AYANEO KONKR Pocket Advance followed the next day from $89.

Both are shaped by the Game Boy line. Both drop analog sticks entirely. Both aim at the same person, someone who mostly plays 2D games and does not want to spend much. But they are built on opposite philosophies, and the $25 gap buys you more than $25 of difference.

Screen

Both are 3:2, which is the correct ratio for Game Boy Advance and close enough for 4:3 systems. The difference is resolution.

The KONKR runs 960 x 640, which is exactly 4x the Game Boy Advance's 240 x 160. Every original pixel becomes a clean 4 by 4 block with no scaling artifacts at all. It is the sharpest GBA presentation available outside FPGA hardware.

The RG SP runs 720 x 480 with OCA full lamination. It is a good panel and lamination genuinely helps perceived quality, but 720 x 480 does not divide evenly into GBA's resolution, so you take a small scaling compromise.

Winner: KONKR Pocket Advance, on the resolution math alone.

Performance

Not close.

The Allwinner H700 is a budget Linux chip. It runs everything through the 16-bit era perfectly, GBA flawlessly, and PS1 well. PSP and Dreamcast are workable with per game tuning. That is the ceiling.

The Helio G90T is an older MediaTek part with weaker drivers than a Snapdragon, but it comfortably clears everything the H700 does and then keeps going. PSP runs properly. Nintendo DS is fine. Dreamcast is playable. Lighter PS2 titles actually work.

Winner: KONKR Pocket Advance, by a full generation of systems.

Operating System

This is the biggest practical difference and it goes deeper than the spec sheet.

The RG SP runs Anbernic's Linux firmware. It boots straight into a game list, which is fast and simple. The catch is that you are dependent on custom firmware projects like muOS and KNULLI for the good experience, and neither was ready at RG SP launch.

The KONKR runs Android. Every emulator, every frontend, RetroAchievements, cloud streaming, and anything else you want to install. You are never waiting on a firmware project.

Android costs you boot time and simplicity. If you want a device a child can pick up and use, Linux wins. For everyone else, Android wins.

Winner: KONKR Pocket Advance for flexibility. RG SP for simplicity.

Form Factor

Here the RG SP takes a clear win.

It folds. The screen is protected when closed, magnets and a hall switch put it to sleep automatically, and at 168 grams it is genuinely pocketable. This is the most portable folding handheld Anbernic has built.

The KONKR is a fixed slab at 224 grams and 22 mm thick. It is light for what it is, but it does not fold and the screen is exposed.

If you carry a handheld in a jacket pocket or a bag every day, that difference matters more than any spec.

Battery and Charging

The KONKR has a larger 4,000 mAh cell versus 3,300 mAh, and it supports USB-C Power Delivery. The RG SP charges at 5V/1.5A, which is slow.

The RG SP's lower power chip claws back some of the runtime gap, so real world endurance is closer than the numbers suggest. But charging speed is not close at all.

Extras

The RG SP has a few things the KONKR does not. HD video out to a TV, Bluetooth and 2.4G and wired controller support, a vibration motor, dual microSD slots with a 16 GB card included, and Wi-Fi multiplayer.

That controller and TV combination is more useful than it sounds. It means the stickless RG SP can still handle N64 and Dreamcast when docked with a real pad.

The KONKR answers with Android, which is arguably every extra at once.

Price

$64.99 versus $89 at preorder. The real gap now is wider, because KONKR preorder pricing has ended and retail is $109 to $129, while the RG SP holds at $64.99.

Call it $65 versus $109. That is a 68 percent premium for the KONKR, which changes the calculation from "small step up" to "meaningfully more money."

The Final Call

Choose the Anbernic RG SP if:

  • You want to spend as little as possible
  • You want a folding shell that protects the screen and sleeps on close
  • Your library is GBA, SNES, NES, Genesis, and 2D PS1

  • You want something a kid can pick up and play with no setup

Choose the KONKR Pocket Advance if:
