Hyperkin Mega95

Hyperkin Mega95 retro handheld

About this device

The Hyperkin Mega95 is a 5 inch handheld that plays real Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges and docks to a TV. It uses software emulation rather than FPGA. Price and release date are unannounced as of November 2026.

The Hyperkin Mega95 is a handheld that plays original Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges, shaped like a Genesis controller, with a 5 inch IPS screen and an included USB-C dock carrying two original Sega controller ports. Hyperkin revealed it at CES in January 2024 and it spent nearly three years in development, delayed first by a software build producing visual artifacts and screen tearing, then in May 2026 by tooled factory samples that failed the company's own quality bar. In late October 2026 Hyperkin said R&D and community testing were complete and mass production was starting, with pre-order news to follow. The critical thing to understand is that this is not an FPGA device. It is reported to read the cartridge into memory and run it on a software emulator, the same approach as Hyperkin's MegaRetroN HD and the poorly received RetroN GX, which means cartridge compatibility is the spec that matters rather than raw performance. Genesis is trivially easy to emulate, so the cart slot is the entire value proposition. Price, release date, panel resolution, chipset and flash cart support are all unannounced.
