Dolphin has had a quietly enormous year, and most of it happened without a headline.
In March, release 2603 merged arcade emulation into the mainline build and landed a performance fix that had been out of reach for over a decade. In July, the project's compatibility numbers crossed a line nobody expected to see: 97.8% of the combined GameCube and Wii library is now playable, and 69% of Wii games are rated Perfect.
Here is what actually changed, and the honest version of what it means if you play on a handheld.
Dolphin Emulates an Arcade Board Now
Release 2603, from March 12, 2026, brought Triforce support into mainline Dolphin.
The Triforce was a joint arcade board from Sega, Namco and Nintendo, built on GameCube hardware. That shared foundation is exactly why Dolphin was the right project to take it on. Triforce work had lived in forks for years, and 2603 folded it into the official build.
The headline titles are Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, both playable. These are Mario Kart games that never got a home release. If you have only ever seen them in a YouTube video of a Japanese arcade, that is because for two decades that was the only way to see them.
You enable it in Options, then Configuration, then GameCube, through the SP1 device setting.
The MMU Fix That Unblocked Rogue Squadron
The bigger technical story in 2603 is page table mappings in fastmem.
Fastmem is the trick that lets an emulator handle memory accesses quickly instead of checking every single one in software. Some GameCube and Wii games use the console's full memory management unit, and those games historically could not use fastmem at all. They ran through the slow path, and they ran badly.
2603 extended fastmem to cover them. The games that benefit are the ones that were famously miserable: Rogue Squadron II, Rogue Squadron III and Car2. Rogue Squadron III in particular went from a long standing "this does not really work" case to fairly playable at full speed, with gains reported up to 300% in its heaviest scenes once you also disable Branch Following and enable CPU Vertex Culling.
2603 also shipped a set of smaller wins. New SDL controller settings let you split left and right Joy-Cons into two separate controllers, which is genuinely useful for emulating a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. There are workarounds for 8BitDo, DualShock 4 and DualSense quirks. Mario Strikers Charged online desyncs got fixed, and six more games picked up performance patches including Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and Rabbids Go Home.
The Honest Part: Those Numbers Are Desktop Numbers
This is where we have to be careful, because a lot of coverage was not.
Every published fastmem benchmark for 2603 is x86 desktop. Fastmem does exist in Dolphin's ARM64 backend, but no ARM performance numbers have been published for this change. Worse, Dolphin's own documentation has long noted that the AArch64 JIT is historically at its weakest on exactly the full MMU games this fix targets.
So the accurate statement is this. On a desktop or an x86 handheld, the Rogue Squadron improvement is confirmed and it is large. On an Android handheld, it is untested. It may help. It may help less than you would hope. Nobody has published the numbers.
We have kept our Snapdragon performance figures in the GameCube and Wii emulation guide unchanged for this reason, and we will update them when real ARM testing appears.
If you want the confirmed benefit today, it is on the x86 side. The Steam Deck OLED and other PC handhelds run the same builds the benchmarks were taken on, and our GameCube on Steam Deck guide covers the setup.
97.8% Playable, and 69% Perfect
In July, the compatibility numbers made the rounds, and they deserved the attention.
As of July 21, 2026, 97.8% of the combined GameCube and Wii library is playable in Dolphin. The share of Wii games rated Perfect, meaning no issues at all, sits at 69%. In 2023 that figure was 38.2%.
Nearly doubling the Perfect rate in under three years is the kind of progress that only shows up in a mature project when something structural improves, and the MMU work is a big part of that story.
The remaining 2.2% is a thin, stubborn slice. It is dominated by niche titles that stress Dolphin at the level of individual CPU instructions and hardware register timing. These are not the games most people are trying to play. They are the games that expose the last edge cases in an emulator that is otherwise finished.
What This Means If You Play on a Handheld
Three practical takeaways.
Compatibility is basically solved, performance is the variable. When a project is at 97.8%, the question stops being "does this game run" and becomes "does my device run it." That shifts the whole buying decision toward chipset. Our best handhelds for GameCube emulation and best handhelds for Wii emulation guides are built around exactly that question.
Arcade support is a genuinely new category. Triforce games are not in anybody's existing collection. If you have been building an arcade setup, this is a small library that just became reachable, and our arcade games guide covers the wider picture.
Do not assume desktop gains transfer to Android. This is the mistake to avoid this year. A 300% figure from an x86 benchmark tells you nothing reliable about a Snapdragon chip. If you are shopping on the strength of a headline number, check what hardware it was measured on.
For settings that actually move the needle on Android today, our Dolphin on Android guide has the configuration that works.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Triforce and why can Dolphin emulate it?
The Triforce was an arcade board developed jointly by Sega, Namco and Nintendo, built on GameCube hardware. That shared architecture is why Dolphin was well placed to support it. Triforce emulation was merged into mainline Dolphin in release 2603 in March 2026.
Which Triforce games can Dolphin play?
Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 are the headline playable titles. Both were arcade exclusives that never received a home console release.
What is Dolphin's compatibility rate in 2026?
As of July 21, 2026, 97.8% of the combined GameCube and Wii library is playable, and 69% of Wii games are rated Perfect. The Perfect figure was 38.2% in 2023.
Does the Dolphin 2603 performance boost help Android handhelds?
Unknown. Every published benchmark for the fastmem change is x86 desktop. Fastmem exists in Dolphin's ARM64 backend, but no ARM numbers have been published, and Dolphin's own docs note the AArch64 JIT is historically weakest on these full MMU games.
Which games benefit most from the Dolphin 2603 MMU fix?
Rogue Squadron II, Rogue Squadron III and Car2. Rogue Squadron III went from a long standing problem case to fairly playable at full speed on desktop hardware.
How do I enable Triforce support in Dolphin?
Open Options, then Configuration, then the GameCube tab, and set the SP1 device to the Triforce option.
