Getting PS1 running on a Steam Deck takes about ten minutes and no tuning at all. The Deck has roughly a thousand times the horsepower the console had. Every game runs at full speed on the first try.
So this guide skips the performance chapter that our PS2 and GameCube guides need, and spends its time on the question that actually matters: how do you make a 1994 console look good on a 2026 OLED panel?
That turns out to be a genuinely interesting problem, because PS1 games have specific visual flaws that a modern screen makes worse. Fixing them is what this guide is for. We assume you are playing games you already own.
Step 1: Install EmuDeck and DuckStation
Switch to Desktop Mode, install EmuDeck, and run Easy Mode. It installs DuckStation among the rest. Our EmuDeck Steam Deck setup guide covers the full walkthrough if this is your first emulator on the Deck.
Copy your game files into Emulation/roms/psx, then run Steam ROM Manager, enable the PS1 parser, and save. Your games now appear in Gaming Mode with box art.
PS1 discs are small by modern standards, so the whole library fits on internal storage comfortably. A card is optional here in a way it never is for PS2.
Step 2: The BIOS Question
DuckStation strongly prefers a real PS1 BIOS. It has an open source replacement built in, but compatibility is better with the real thing, and a few games misbehave without it.

Step 3: Fix the Wobble with PGXP
Here is the setting that matters most, and most people have never heard of it.
The PS1 had no floating point unit for graphics. It snapped every vertex to whole pixel positions, which is why PS1 geometry visibly jitters and swims as the camera moves. Textures warp across surfaces because the console had no perspective correction either. On a small CRT this was invisible. On the Deck's screen it is very obvious.
DuckStation's PGXP feature reconstructs the precision the hardware threw away.
- Enable PGXP in the Enhancements settings.
- Turn on PGXP Geometry Correction. This is the one that stops the wobble.
- Turn on Perspective Correct Textures. This stops textures from warping across large flat surfaces like floors and walls.
- Leave PGXP CPU Mode off unless a specific game needs it. It is slower and it breaks more than it fixes in most titles.
- Turn on PGXP Depth Buffer for games with bad polygon sorting, where objects flicker in front of things they should be behind.
The difference is dramatic. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VIII, and Silent Hill go from visibly unstable to rock solid. This costs the Deck almost nothing, so leave it on.
Step 4: Internal Resolution
PS1 rendered at roughly 320x240. DuckStation can render the 3D at a multiple of that while leaving 2D sprites and pre-rendered backgrounds alone.
Set the resolution scale to 4x or 5x. The Deck handles far more, but past about 5x you stop seeing improvement on a 7 inch screen and start seeing a different problem: pre-rendered backgrounds stay at their original resolution while characters get sharper, so the mismatch grows. Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil look strange at very high scales for exactly this reason.
For those pre-rendered games, 2x or 3x actually looks more coherent than 8x.
Step 5: The Aspect Ratio Decision
The Deck's screen is 16:10. PS1 output 4:3. You have three options and there is no universally right answer.
- Auto or 4:3 gives you pillarboxed play with black bars either side. This is correct and it is what we recommend. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched.
- Stretch to 16:10 fills the screen and distorts everything. Avoid it.
- Widescreen hack renders the game at a true widescreen field of view. DuckStation supports this and it works beautifully in some games. It also breaks HUDs, causes objects to pop in at the screen edges, and confuses pre-rendered backgrounds completely. Try it per game rather than globally.
If the black bars bother you, a CRT shader is a better answer than stretching.
Step 6: Shaders and Filtering
This is where you decide what era you want the games to feel like.
- No filtering, sharp pixels. Honest and clean. Fine for 3D games at high internal resolution.
- Texture filtering. DuckStation offers several modes including xBR. It smooths textures, which suits some games and turns others to mush. Try it on a case by case basis.
- A CRT shader. This is the option worth trying if you have never used one. PS1 art was designed for a CRT with visible scanlines and natural blending. A good CRT shader restores that intent, and it happens to fill more of the Deck's screen along the way. Our RetroArch shaders guide explains the families.
Personal taste rules here. Try a CRT shader on Symphony of the Night and a sharp 4x render on Gran Turismo 2, and you will quickly work out which side you are on.
Step 7: Controls and Saves
The Deck's layout maps to a DualShock almost one to one, which makes PS1 the easiest system on the Deck for controls.
- Save a DuckStation controller profile once and it applies across your library.
- The right trackpad works well as a mouse for the handful of PS1 games that supported one.
- Rumble works if you enable the analog controller type. Some games need you to press the analog button in game before sticks respond, exactly like the real hardware.
- Keep memory card saves as well as save states. Save states are convenient, but a corrupted state loses everything and a memory card file does not.
Battery Life
PS1 on the Deck is the most efficient thing you can do with it. Cap the frame rate to 60, drop the TDP limit to around 5W in the Quick Access menu, and lower brightness. You will get many hours out of a charge, comfortably more than a demanding PS2 session.
This is the one case where the Deck genuinely competes with a budget handheld on endurance.
Troubleshooting
- Game runs at the wrong speed. PS1 had PAL and NTSC versions at different frame rates. Check the region setting matches your game rather than forcing NTSC.
- Black screen on boot. Usually a bad disc image or a multi-track game where you loaded the wrong file. Load the
.cueor.m3ufile, not an individual.bintrack. - Disc swap prompts in multi-disc games. Create an
.m3uplaylist listing the discs in order, then load that. DuckStation handles the swap without leaving the game. - Audio stutters in FMV. Increase the audio buffer slightly in DuckStation's audio settings.
- PGXP makes a specific game look worse. A few games with unusual rendering do not respond well to it. Turn Geometry Correction off for that title in its per-game settings rather than globally.
