The PlayStation 2 has one of the deepest libraries in gaming, and the Steam Deck handles it well. PCSX2 runs the vast majority of PS2 games at full speed, with upscaling that makes them look far better than they did on a CRT. This guide walks through setup with EmuDeck, adding your games and BIOS, and tuning PCSX2 for the Deck. We frame everything around playing games you already own, including using a BIOS dumped from your own console.

Why the Steam Deck Is a Great PS2 Machine
PS2 emulation is demanding, and the Deck's x86 chip has the power for it where budget ARM handhelds fall short. You get full-speed play plus internal upscaling for a crisp image. New to Deck emulation? Start with our Steam Deck retro gaming guide.
What You Need
- A Steam Deck, ideally the Steam Deck OLED
- A microSD card, since PS2 games are large
- A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own console
- Your own PS2 game files
- About 30 minutes
PS2 discs are big, so a roomy
helps.A Note on BIOS
PCSX2 needs a PS2 BIOS to run. The legal way to get one is to dump it from a PS2 console you own. We do not link to or provide BIOS files. Once you have your own BIOS, EmuDeck shows you exactly where to place it. Our PS2 emulators guide covers the background.
Step 1: Install EmuDeck
- Switch to Desktop Mode from the power menu.
- Download EmuDeck from its official site and run the installer.
- Use Easy Mode, which installs PCSX2 among the other emulators.
See our EmuDeck Steam Deck setup guide for the full process.
Step 2: Add Your BIOS and Games
- In Desktop Mode, open the file manager.
- Place your own PS2 BIOS in the EmuDeck BIOS folder.
- Go to the Emulation folder, then ROMs, then the PS2 folder, and copy your game files in.
Step 3: Add Games to Steam
- Open Steam ROM Manager from EmuDeck.
- Enable the PS2 parser and let it scan.
- Preview the box art and save to Steam.
Your PS2 games now appear in your Steam library in Gaming Mode.
Step 4: Best PCSX2 Settings for the Steam Deck
PCSX2 runs well on the Deck with a few sensible choices.
- Renderer. Use the Vulkan renderer for good performance on the Deck.
- Internal resolution. 2x to 3x native is the sweet spot. Higher looks sharper but costs performance.
- Per-game tuning. Heavier games may need 2x or native, while lighter ones can push to 3x.
- Frame limiting. Keep the speed locked to the game's intended rate.
- Texture filtering. Bilinear filtering smooths textures, which many players prefer for 3D games.
If a game stutters, lower the internal resolution first. Our fix slow or laggy emulation guide helps with stubborn cases.
Controller and Memory Cards
- The Deck's controls map cleanly to the PS2 layout. Save a profile so it applies across PS2 games.
- PCSX2 uses virtual memory cards for in-game saves. Keep these alongside save states for safety.
- For docked play, a Bluetooth pad like the works well.
Tips for the Best Experience
- Try widescreen patches for games that support them, for a fuller image.
- Use save states for convenience but keep memory card saves too.
- Lower brightness and resolution to extend battery on long sessions.
The Bottom Line
The Steam Deck is one of the best portable ways to enjoy the PS2 library. Install EmuDeck, add your own BIOS and games, send them to Steam, and set PCSX2 to Vulkan at 2x to 3x native. For more, see our GameCube on Steam Deck and PSP on Steam Deck guides.
