PokeMMO announced its Black 2 and White 2 expansion on 19 August 2026. Three days later it put a date on the first public look at it.

The preview weekend runs 19 to 20 September 2026. It is a public test server, it is open to everyone, and there are three things about it that people are already getting wrong.

PokeMMO is also one of the very few Pokémon fan projects with official Android and Linux clients, which makes this genuinely relevant to a handheld you already own. We will cover that too.

What The Announcement Actually Says

Here is the full text from PokeMMO administrator Kyu, posted 22 August 2026.

We'll be conducting a public test server event on September 19th until September 20th to test upcoming features. This preview will focus primarily on storyline balancing and testing for the upcoming Black2/White2 expansion. The public test server is a separate server from the main ("live") server. Progress for public test server events is not saved, and this server requires a separate game client. We'll provide instructions on how to access the public test server closer to the date.

That is the whole announcement. Everything else circulating is inference.

The Four Things That Matter

Your progress will not be saved. This is a test server, not an early launch. Whatever you catch, train or complete over that weekend disappears. Go in treating it as a demo, because that is what it is.

You need a separate client. Not your live install, not a patch to it. A different download entirely. If you have played on a public test server before you know the drill.

The instructions are not out yet. PokeMMO says access details come closer to the date. Anyone telling you how to join right now is guessing.

It is one weekend. 19 to 20 September. Miss it and you wait for the real release.

The stated focus is storyline balancing and testing. That is a useful detail. It tells you the expansion is far enough along that the team wants eyes on pacing and difficulty rather than on whether things work at all.

What We Know About The Expansion Itself

Less than you might hope, and we would rather say so than pad this out.

The expansion was announced on 19 August 2026.

PokeMMO already includes Unova. The base game requires a Black or White 1 game file, and Unova is one of the five regions currently in the game. So Black 2 and White 2 is not a new region arriving. It is the sequel storyline, the changed map and the content that came with those games layered onto a region already in PokeMMO.

One genuinely open question: whether the expansion will require a Black 2 or White 2 game file on top of the Black or White 1 file the game already needs. PokeMMO's existing structure has one required game file and four optional ones that unlock extra regions, so either approach would fit the pattern. Nothing has been announced. We are flagging it as unknown rather than guessing, because it is the single most practical question for anyone planning ahead.

What PokeMMO Is, If You Have Not Played It

Worth a quick summary, since the preview weekend is a reasonable moment to try it.

PokeMMO is a free fan built multiplayer Pokémon game. You register an account, download a client, and play Pokémon regions in a shared persistent world with other players. It currently spans five regions.

The part that makes it different from most fan projects is how it handles game files. PokeMMO supplies the client, the servers and the multiplayer layer. It does not supply the games. You point the client at your own files using its in game menu.

Required: Black or White 1.

Optional, for additional content: FireRed, Emerald, Platinum, and HeartGold or SoulSilver.

PokeMMO's own download page states the position plainly:

You must have the legal right to use that rom. We will not supply you with the roms, or help you find them as they are copyrighted.

That is our position too, and it is worth noting that they say it themselves rather than waiting to be asked. Our line has not moved: the source we cover for those files is a cartridge you own and dumped yourself. See ROMs and Legality for where those boundaries sit.

Which Handhelds Run PokeMMO

This is the part that makes PokeMMO more interesting to us than most Pokémon fan projects. It ships real clients for real platforms, rather than being a Windows only build you have to wrestle onto something.

Official clients exist for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, Linux and a portable ZIP.

Android handhelds are well served. There is an official Android client, so a Retroid Pocket 5 or 6, an AYN Odin 2 or 3, or an AYN Thor runs it natively. No compatibility layer, no workarounds. This is the most comfortable way to play PokeMMO portably.

The Steam Deck works well. Use the Linux client or the portable ZIP from desktop mode, then add it as a non Steam game so it launches from Gaming Mode.

iOS needs sideloading. PokeMMO lists AltStore, Signulous and Sideloadly as the routes. That is an App Store policy problem, not a PokeMMO problem.

Your Anbernic, Miyoo or TrimUI cannot run it. No client exists for those devices, and there is no way to make one work. They run emulators, and PokeMMO is a networked application with its own client. Our Linux vs Android handhelds guide explains the split, and it is the same reason those devices cannot run Pokémon Survivor Burst or Pokémon Myth 2 either.

If a portable Pokémon MMO is something you actually want, that is a genuine argument for an Android handheld over a Linux one.

A Note On Server Dependent Projects

The same caveat we gave for Green Trainers Online applies here, though PokeMMO has a much longer track record behind it.

Any fan project that depends on servers can stop existing in a way a downloaded ROM hack cannot. A patch file you saved in 2019 still works today. A game that needs someone else's server running does not.

PokeMMO has been going for well over a decade, which is about as strong a track record as fan projects get. That is not a guarantee. Enjoy it, and hold it a little loosely.

The Nintendo Question

Brief, because PokeMMO's structure answers most of it.

PokeMMO does not distribute Nintendo's games. The client contains the multiplayer layer and nothing else, and the game files come from you. That is the same separation used by the recompilation projects we have covered, like Gen1Recomp, and it is a meaningfully stronger position than a standalone fangame that bundles official assets.

Whether that separation is protection is not something anyone can promise you. Nintendo defends Pokémon harder than any other property it owns. PokeMMO has run for years without being shut down, and no precedent settles the question.

For the wider picture see Emulation Legal Status Mid 2026.

Should You Turn Up

If you already play PokeMMO, obviously. New storyline content, and the team is explicitly asking for feedback on balance.

If you have never played, this is a decent entry point. No progress carries over, so nobody has an advantage, and you get to see new content on the same footing as veterans.

Set expectations about stability. It is a test server. Things break. That is the point of running one.

Sort your setup before the weekend. Register an account, get the standard client working, confirm your game files are recognised. Then when the test client instructions land you are one download away rather than troubleshooting on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the PokeMMO Black 2 and White 2 preview weekend?

19 September until 20 September 2026. It is a public test server event, announced by PokeMMO administrator Kyu on 22 August 2026, focused primarily on storyline balancing and testing for the upcoming Black 2 and White 2 expansion.

Does progress from the PokeMMO preview weekend carry over?

No. PokeMMO states directly that progress on public test server events is not saved. The test server is separate from the main live server, so nothing you do over that weekend transfers to your normal account.

How do I join the PokeMMO public test server?

Instructions have not been published yet. PokeMMO has said the test server requires a separate game client from the live one, and that access instructions will be provided closer to the date.

Do I need a Black 2 or White 2 game file for the expansion?

Unknown. PokeMMO currently requires a Black or White 1 file, with FireRed, Emerald, Platinum and HeartGold or SoulSilver as optional files that unlock extra content. Whether the expansion adds a new requirement has not been announced.

What do I need to play PokeMMO?

A registered account, the client for your platform, and your own legally obtained game files. Black or White 1 is required. FireRed, Emerald, Platinum and HeartGold or SoulSilver are optional and unlock additional content. PokeMMO does not supply game files and says so on its own download page.

Can I play PokeMMO on a handheld?

Yes, on the right kind. There are official clients for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, Linux and a portable ZIP. Android handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 6 or AYN Odin 3 run it natively, and the Steam Deck runs the Linux client or portable ZIP from desktop mode. Linux handhelds such as Anbernic, Miyoo and TrimUI devices cannot run it, because no client exists for them.

Is PokeMMO free?

Yes. The game and all its clients are free, and you register an account to play. You supply your own game files.
