Pokémon Myth 2 has reached version 1.0. After roughly five years of tech demos and numbered patches, Myth Studio's Fakemon fangame is out as a full release.
It is a big one. Two original regions, over 100 original Pokémon, and none of it borrowed from an existing game's map or story.
It is also a 1GB download that will not run on most of the handhelds this site covers. Both of those things are worth twenty minutes of your time, so let us go through them.
What Pokémon Myth 2 Is
It is a fangame, not a ROM hack. The distinction matters and we will come back to it.
Myth Studio built it in RPG Maker XP using Pokémon Essentials. That means it is a standalone application with its own maps, its own script and its own creature roster, presented in the Generation 3 style. If you loved how Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald looked, that is the visual target here.
The game takes place across two regions, Serene and Mythan, each with its own towns, routes and secrets. It is a sequel to the original Pokémon Myth, which is a separate and older project from the same team.
What Is In Version 1.0
The release announcement lists the following.
Two regions. Serene and Mythan, both original.
More than 100 Fakemon. Original creatures designed for this game, with their own designs, typings and lore.
More than 20 regional variants. Reworked versions of existing Pokémon. Earlier builds showed things like an Electric and Flying Pidgey and a Ghost and Ground Riolu, so expect real typing changes rather than palette swaps.
Mega Evolutions. Including Megas for the game's own Fakemon.
Character customization.
An interactive story. The team has been positioning the narrative as the centerpiece since the early demos.
An original soundtrack.
Custom battle AI. This one is easy to skim past and should not be. Stock Essentials AI is not clever. A team writing their own is aiming for battles that actually threaten you.
Boss battles. A dedicated boss battle system arrived back in version 0.9.6 for story important fights, and it carries into 1.0.
Quality of life improvements.
How It Got Here
Worth a short timeline, because "out now" undersells how long this took.
The project has been public since at least 2021. The tech demo era ran through 2025, with version 0.6 arriving in March 2025 playable up to the second gym.
Version 0.9.6 landed on 24 February 2026. That update opened the game up to six gyms and added new Fakemon and regional forms, story and visual changes, and the boss battle system for important fights. Version 0.9.8 followed.
Version 1.0 is the first release the team has called an official version rather than a demo.
The developer has also confirmed what comes next. Once Myth 2 is done, work begins on Pokémon Novagate, a fangame built entirely from custom sprites, tiles and assets with no official Pokémon graphics used at all. That is a deliberate choice and an interesting one, for reasons the next section covers.
Which Handheld Can Run It
This is where a fangame differs sharply from the ROM hacks we usually cover, and it is the part almost no coverage bothers with.
Your Anbernic, Miyoo, TrimUI or Powkiddy cannot run this. Those devices run emulators. A ROM hack like Heart & Soul works on them because it is still a GBA game underneath. Myth 2 is a compiled RPG Maker application, so ArkOS, muOS, OnionOS and KNULLI have nothing to launch it with. Our Linux vs Android handhelds guide covers why that divide exists.
It is almost certainly Windows only. The only build advertised is a 1GB Windows zip, with no macOS or mobile package alongside it.
The Steam Deck is the realistic option. RPG Maker XP games generally run under Proton without much trouble. You would add it as a non Steam game from desktop mode.
Android handhelds need Joiplay. Joiplay is a compatibility layer that runs RPG Maker games on Android, and it is the standard route for Essentials fangames on devices like the Retroid Pocket 6 or the AYN Odin 3. It works well for a lot of games and poorly for some.
The 1GB Problem
Worth its own heading because it is a practical handheld issue rather than a footnote.
The download is 1.01GB compressed. Extracted, it will be larger.
On a Steam Deck that is nothing. On an Android handheld with 128GB of storage shared with your emulation library, it is a real chunk. On any device where you are already juggling what fits, plan for it.
For comparison, every GBA ROM hack we have covered this year is measured in megabytes. Heart & Soul, Ghost Grey and the rest are patch files a few kilobytes in size applied to a 16MB game. A standalone fangame with an original soundtrack and hundreds of custom sprites is a different category of file.
How To Get It
Myth Studio links the current build directly from the game's official X account bio, which is where the newest version always lives. There is also an official Discord for the project.
Those are the places to look. Fangame download aggregators repackage these builds and often serve outdated versions, and we do not point people toward them.
The Nintendo Question
This comes up on every Pokémon fan project, and the honest answer for a fangame is different from the answer for a ROM hack.
A ROM hack distributed as a patch contains the developer's changes only. Nintendo's game stays out of the download and you supply it yourself. That structure is why we can cover those projects the way we do.
A standalone fangame does not have that protection. Myth 2 ships as a complete playable package. Even with over 100 original creatures and two original regions, an Essentials game is built on top of official sprites, tiles, sound effects and mechanics that are bundled into the distributed file.
Nintendo has acted here before. Pokémon Uranium and Pokémon Prism are the projects everyone points to, both taken down after years of development. Whether anything happens to Myth 2 is not something anyone can promise you.
This is also the clearest possible explanation for why the team's next project, Pokémon Novagate, is being built with nothing but custom assets and no official Pokémon sprites. That is a developer reading the same situation and designing around it.
We are not going to predict what happens. We are saying that if this is a game you want to play, the sensible time to download it is while it is up. For background see ROMs and Legality and Emulation Legal Status Mid 2026.
Should You Play It
If you like Fakemon games, this is a big one. Over 100 original creatures with Megas and regional variants is a serious amount of design work, and the Gen 3 presentation is well suited to it.
If you want it on a retro handheld, look elsewhere. Heart & Soul and Ghost Grey are GBA hacks that run on anything, including the cheapest device in your drawer.
Steam Deck owners have the easiest path. Download, extract, add as a non Steam game.
Go in knowing the story status is unclear. Version 1.0 is the first release the team has called official rather than a demo, but no public statement confirms whether the campaign runs to completion across both regions. If you are the kind of player who hates stopping halfway, wait for a few community playthrough reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pokémon Myth 2?
It is a Pokémon fangame by Myth Studio, built in RPG Maker XP using Pokémon Essentials, presented in the Generation 3 style of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. It is set across two original regions called Serene and Mythan, and version 1.0 is now available. It is a fangame rather than a ROM hack, which means it is a standalone application rather than a patch you apply to an existing game.
How many Fakemon are in Pokémon Myth 2?
The release announcement states more than 100 Fakemon, plus more than 20 regional variants of existing Pokémon and a set of Mega Evolutions that includes Megas for the game's own creatures. Those figures are the developer's, not the result of our own count.
Do I need a ROM to play Pokémon Myth 2?
No. It is a standalone application, so there is no base game to supply, nothing to patch and nothing to dump. You download the build and run it.
Can I play Pokémon Myth 2 on an Anbernic or Miyoo handheld?
No. Those devices run emulators, and Myth 2 is a compiled RPG Maker application rather than emulator content. ArkOS, muOS, OnionOS and KNULLI cannot launch it. A Steam Deck or an Android handheld running Joiplay are the portable options.
How big is the Pokémon Myth 2 download?
The version 1.0 zip is roughly 1.01GB, and it will take more space once extracted. That is negligible on a Steam Deck but worth planning for on an Android handheld sharing storage with an emulation library.
Can I play Pokémon Myth 2 on Android?
Not directly. Android handhelds need Joiplay, a compatibility layer that runs RPG Maker games on Android and is the usual route for Pokémon Essentials fangames. Compatibility with Myth 2 specifically has not been confirmed, so treat it as worth trying rather than guaranteed.
What is Pokémon Novagate?
It is Myth Studio's next project, confirmed to begin development after Myth 2 is finished. The stated plan is a Pokémon fangame built entirely from custom sprites, tiles and assets, using no official Pokémon graphics and no free to use assets.
