Pokémon Ghost Grey Version released on 21 August 2026, and it has been everywhere since. It is a FireRed hack, it is finished rather than a demo, and it is the third Pokémon fan project in a month to take over everyone's feed.
This one is different from the last two, though. Gen1Recomp was a recompilation and FireRed Faithful 2.5D is a visual harness. Ghost Grey is a plain old ROM hack, which makes it the easiest of the three to actually play on a handheld.
The Short Version
Ghost Grey is a horror themed hack built on Pokémon FireRed by a developer going by JoeyZeed. You play through a version of Kanto set in 2049, roughly fifty years after the events of Gold, Silver and Crystal. The region has decayed. The people still living there are not doing well.
It ships as a complete game. The main campaign, the secrets and the post game content are all in this release. It is not an early build.
The pitch, in the developer's own framing, is a love letter to the creepypastas and edgy hacks of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Think Lavender Town rumours and Missingno legends, except made deliberately and with actual craft behind it.
What Is Actually In It
The scope is larger than most hacks in this genre attempt.
Over 200 ghost Pokémon. That number covers every existing Ghost type plus more than 120 original regional variants built for this hack. The variants are the interesting part. Familiar Kanto Pokémon show up warped by whatever happened to the region.
Seven gyms instead of eight. A small change that tells you something about the story. One of them is missing.
A full graphical overhaul. New battle animations, new overworld sprites, new items, new areas. This is not a reskin with a darker palette.
An original soundtrack. More than 130 songs and jingles composed by a musician credited as Whale, written specifically for Ghost Grey. There is voice acting in here too.
The Mechanics Are Modernised
This matters more than it sounds, because a lot of FireRed hacks still play like 2004.
Ghost Grey adds the Fairy type. It implements the physical and special split, so a move's damage category is no longer locked to its type. Abilities from later generations are in, which they had to be given how many new Pokémon are here. Items from future games made the cut too, including Choice Scarf and Eviolite.
There are quality of life changes as well. TMs have unlimited uses. Rare Candy is a key item rather than a consumable you hoard.
Taken together, that is a battle system closer to a modern Pokémon game than to the one this hack is built on. If you have bounced off older hacks because the type chart and the phys/special rules felt archaic, that objection does not apply here.
How You Actually Get It Running
Ghost Grey is distributed as a patch, not as a game file. This is standard for the format and it is also the reason we can cover it.
You supply the base game. The patch modifies it. You need a Pokémon FireRed version 1.0 dump, and the only source for that we cover is a cartridge you own. Dump it yourself. That is the whole story on where the file comes from.
Once you have that, patching is a two minute job with the right tool. The one Ghost Grey specific gotcha is the base version. FireRed 1.0 and FireRed 1.1 are different files. If your patch refuses to apply or the checksum does not match, that is almost always the reason.
Which Handhelds Run It Well
Good news here. This is a GBA hack, so essentially every retro handheld made in the last decade will run it at full speed. The question is which one gives you the best experience for a long horror RPG.
Vertical screen handhelds are the natural fit. GBA games are 3:2, and devices built around that aspect ratio show the game without letterboxing or stretching. The Anbernic RG35XX SP and RG34XX SP are the obvious picks, and the clamshell design suits a game you will pick up and put down over many sessions.
Anything cheap works. A Miyoo Mini Plus, a TrimUI Brick or a Powkiddy V90 all handle GBA without breaking a sweat. If you already own one of these, you do not need to buy anything.

The practical answer is that hardware is not a constraint here. Pick whatever screen you want to look at for forty hours.
What to Expect Going In
A few honest notes before you start.
It is a horror game and it commits to it. The description talks about ghosts, ghouls and broken people with no way out. If the appeal of Pokémon for you is that it is gentle, this is not going to be that.
New Pokémon means new type matchups to learn. With 120 plus original variants, your Kanto knowledge is only partly useful. Expect to lose fights to things you thought you understood.
Seven badges is a shorter gym structure but not necessarily a shorter game. The post game content is part of this release.

The Nintendo Question
Worth addressing since it hangs over every Pokémon fan project, and we get asked every time.
ROM hacks distributed as patches occupy a different position than distributing a modified game file. The patch itself contains the developer's changes, not Nintendo's game. That is why the format exists in the first place.
Whether that is protection is not something anyone can promise you. Nintendo has an extensive takedown record and Pokémon is the property it defends hardest. As of August 2026 nothing has been issued here, and no precedent settles the question.
