Every list of the best Pokémon fan games tells you the same thing about hardware, which is nothing. You read about a game with twenty hours of story and a custom battle system, you go to install it, and you find out it is a Windows executable and you were reading on a phone.

We have been guilty of a version of this ourselves. Our Pokémon ROM hacks guide said fan games do not run on budget Linux handhelds. That is true for most of them and wrong for the two biggest ones, which turn out to be official PortMaster ports. We have corrected that, and this article is the longer answer.

So here is the list, sorted the only way that matters: by the hardware you need.

First, These Are Not ROM Hacks

This distinction decides everything, so it goes before the list.

A ROM hack is a patch. It contains only the developer's changes, and you apply it to a copy of an original game that you dumped from a cartridge you own. The result runs in an emulator. Our ROM hacks guide covers those.

A fan game is a standalone application. There is no base game, no patch, nothing to dump and nothing to apply. Most of them are built in RPG Maker XP using a toolkit called Pokémon Essentials, and they ship as a Windows program you download from the developer's own site and run.

That difference is why the hardware answer flips completely. A GBA ROM hack runs on anything with a GBA emulator, which is every handheld ever made. A fan game needs something that can run a PC application, which most retro handhelds cannot do.

It is also why the legal picture is cleaner. You never need a game file from Nintendo to play any game on this list. They are free, original, standalone downloads from their developers.

Runs on a 40 Dollar Linux Handheld: The PortMaster Ports

This is the section no other list has, and it is genuinely surprising.

Pokémon Reborn and Pokémon Rejuvenation are official PortMaster ports. Not unofficial builds, not a workaround. They are in PortMaster's own library, ported by JanTrueno, and PortMaster's manifest lists them as available on 28 devices.

That list covers the cheap end of the market properly. The Anbernic RG28XX, RG34XX H and SP, RG35XX Plus, H and SP, RG40XX H and V, RG Cube XX, RG353M, RG353PS, RG503 and RG552. The TrimUI Brick and Smart Pro. The Powkiddy RGB30, RGB10 Max 3 and X55. The Retroid Pocket 5 and RP Mini. The GKD Bubble.

If you own a budget retro handheld bought in the last few years, there is a good chance one of the two deepest Pokémon fan games ever made will run on it.

Two things to know before you get excited. Both ports are marked as needing more power rather than being safe on the very bottom tier, and PortMaster's own announcement warned that both games are memory heavy and told people to save often. And neither is ready to run, which means you supply the game files yourself.

Pokémon Reborn

Engine: RPG Maker XP / Pokémon Essentials · Developer: Amethyst and the Reborn team · Complete at Episode 19

The serious one. Reborn is set in a collapsing industrial region and it is not trying to be charming. Eighteen gyms, one for every type, plus an Elite Four and a Champion. All 807 Pokémon through Generation 7 are obtainable.

The reason people have played this for a decade is the Field Effects system. Every battle takes place on terrain that changes how moves behave. A grassy field, a burning building, a corroded factory floor, each with its own rules about what gets boosted, what gets weakened and what new effects trigger. It is the most interesting battle mechanic anyone has added to Pokémon, official games included.

Episode 19 is the final release, so the story is complete. It also added a password system that lets you soften the difficulty if you want, including disabling experience gain at the level cap and starting with grinding aids.

The version trap. The PortMaster port needs the legacy Windows build, version 19.16 or 19.17. Not whatever is newest. The port's own instructions tell you to check the version file that ships with the game. Get this wrong and the port will not work.

You download the Windows build from the developers at rebornevo.com, install it, then copy the contents of the game folder into the port folder on your handheld.

Pokémon Rejuvenation

Engine: RPG Maker XP / Pokémon Essentials · Developer: Jan and the Rejuvenation team · Version 14, released 15 July 2026

Reborn's sibling project, set in the Aevium region decades after a catastrophe called Storm 9 tore it apart. Same studio lineage, same Field Effects depth, a bigger and stranger story.

Version 14 arrived in July 2026 and covers the main story from Chapter 1 through Chapter 16. It brought Generation 9 Pokémon in natively. Development continues, with V15 in progress and V16 planned as the final update.

The version trap is worse here. The PortMaster port is pinned to version 13.5.0, and the port's own notes say future updates may be incompatible. Version 14 is the current release. That means the newest version of Rejuvenation is not the version the handheld port runs.

This is the single most useful thing in this article, so to be blunt about it: if you want Rejuvenation on an Anbernic, you need the older 13.5.0 build, not the one the download page pushes at you. If you want V14 and its Generation 9 Pokémon, you need a PC.

Runs on Android: JoiPlay and mkxp-z

Android is the middle tier. An Android handheld or phone cannot run a Windows executable, but Essentials games are built on RPG Maker XP, and there are Android runtimes that understand RPG Maker projects directly.

The common one is JoiPlay, which is a launcher built on mkxp technology that runs RPG Maker VX Ace and XP projects on Android with touch controls. The thing to know is that JoiPlay was removed from the Google Play Store, so it is no longer a clean one tap install, and compatibility with any specific game is hit and miss.

This route works, but set your expectations. It is fiddlier than the PortMaster path and much fiddlier than just using a PC.

Pokémon Insurgence

Engine: RPG Maker XP / Pokémon Essentials · Version 1.2.7, complete

The dark one. Insurgence is set in Torren, a region run by cults, and it commits to that tone harder than any other major fan game. Its signature addition is Delta Species, which are Pokémon with entirely different typings, stats and designs from their normal forms. There are also Mega Evolutions for Pokémon that never got them officially.

It is complete at 1.2.7, it runs on Windows and Mac, and it is one of the more reliable games to get working under JoiPlay on Android.

Pokémon Infinite Fusion

Engine: RPG Maker XP / Pokémon Essentials · Version 6.8.2

The most creative idea in the hobby. Fuse any two Pokémon and get a single new one, with merged typing, merged stats and an actual sprite. There are over 250,000 possible combinations, and volunteer artists have hand drawn more than 150,000 custom sprites so that the common fusions look deliberate rather than generated.

Beyond the gimmick it is a full game. Sixteen gym badges, 25 legendary Pokémon, post game content and original locations.

The July 2026 update to 6.8.2 tied it closer to Infinite Fusion 2: Hoenn, adding 75 Hoenn Pokémon and a Transfer Box for moving Pokémon between the two projects.

It was built for Windows, and with extra setup it runs on Android, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and Steam Deck. Of everything in this section it has the widest set of community install paths, which is what you would expect from the most popular fan game there is.

Needs a PC or a Steam Deck

Everything here is a desktop application. A Windows handheld or a Steam Deck is the portable answer.

Windows builds of Essentials games are generally well behaved under Proton, which is what a Steam Deck uses to run Windows software. There is also a native Linux path in principle, since mkxp-z targets Linux.

Pokémon Gamma Emerald

Engine: Unreal Engine 5 · Developer: UndreamedPanic · Early Access since 15 August 2026

The newest thing worth your attention, and the only game here that is not an Essentials project.

Gamma Emerald is a remake of Pokémon Emerald built in Unreal Engine 5. Worth correcting one thing straight away: despite the engine, it is not 3D. It is HD-2D, the style where pixel art characters move through 3D environments with modern lighting and depth of field. Pixel sprites, real lighting, layered scenery.

It entered Early Access on 15 August 2026 for Windows. The current build runs from Littleroot Town to Mauville City, which is three gyms and roughly three to six hours. It includes day and night cycles, the berry system, egg breeding and move tutors.

Being Unreal Engine 5 means this is the one game on this list with real hardware requirements. It will not run under JoiPlay, it is not coming to PortMaster, and a budget handheld is not in the conversation.

Pokémon Xenoverse

Engine: RPG Maker XP / Pokémon Essentials · Original on Essentials v17, remake in progress

An Italian project with its own set of original Pokémon called Xenomorphs, unrelated to the films. It has a reputation for a genuinely strange and ambitious story.

Worth knowing that it is mid transition. A remake called Xenoverse: Ordem Et Chaos is rebuilding the game on Essentials v21.1 with updated sprites, and Demo 2 landed in February 2026 covering the first couple of gyms. The original full game is still the complete experience. PC only, with JoiPlay as the Android workaround.

These Projects Do Get Taken Down

Nintendo has acted against standalone Pokémon fan games before. Pokémon Uranium and Pokémon Prism are the two everyone remembers, and both were taken down after years of work. Whether anything happens to any project on this list is not something anyone can promise you, and no precedent settles it.

The practical advice is simple. If a fan game interests you, download it while it is there. Keep the installer.

What You Need to Play These

The hardware answer splits three ways, which is the whole point of this article.

For the two PortMaster games, almost any budget Linux handheld from the last few years works, though these two are heavier than most ports so the middle of the budget range is a safer bet than the bottom.

For the Android route, any Android handheld runs JoiPlay, and a device with real controls beats a phone with a clip on grip.

For everything else, you want a Windows handheld or a Steam Deck.
