PSP Games Transformed by Upscaling: The Biggest Jump in Emulation
2026-08-31 · Game list · Updated 2026-08-31
If you want the single most dramatic before and after in emulation, it is the PSP.
The reason is arithmetic. PSP games rendered at 480x272, which is a very small number of pixels. Running the same games at 5x gives you 2400x1360, roughly nineteen times the pixel count, and unlike a home console the PSP's assets were often built to a higher standard than its screen could show. Sony's first party studios in particular were producing near PS2 quality work and displaying it on a 4.3 inch panel.
The result is that PSP games at high resolution do not look like handheld games. They look like console games, because in most respects that is what they were.
PPSSPP is also efficient enough that this costs almost nothing. This is the highest return upgrade in the hobby.
This is not a list of the best PSP games, which we cover separately. This is which ones to revisit.
Why The PSP Gains More Than Anything Else
The base resolution was tiny. 480x272 is less than a third of 720p. Every multiplier you add is doing more visible work than the equivalent step on a home console.
The assets were better than the screen. PSP developers frequently authored models and textures at higher quality than 272 lines could resolve, particularly on Sony's internal titles. Upscaling reveals genuine detail rather than stretching mush.
It is cheap to emulate. PPSSPP is famously efficient. A device that struggles with PS2 at 2x will often manage PSP at 4x or 5x without complaint.
Texture replacement is mature. PPSSPP supports texture replacement natively and there are good packs for the major titles.
The Showcases
God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta. The standard demonstrations, and deservedly. These were astonishing technical achievements on the hardware, pushing detail the screen could never show. At 4x or 5x they look like PS2 games at minimum, and in places better. Start here.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Detailed character models and heavy use of cutscene direction that was being squeezed into 272 lines. The gain is enormous.
Daxter. One of the best looking games on the system, built by a studio that understood the hardware. Bright, clean and gorgeous upscaled.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. A late release that pushed the hardware hard, with art direction that rewards clarity.
Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse. Clean geometry, sharp graphic design and high speed. This is close to an ideal upscaling profile, and the UI design in particular was ahead of its time and looks superb sharp.
Gran Turismo (PSP). Rendered at 60fps on hardware and full of car detail the screen could not resolve.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Not the prettiest game on the list, but it is the one people put hundreds of hours into, and the clarity improvement to a game you play that long is worth more than a prettier game you finish once.
Persona 3 Portable. Strong graphic design and heavy menu use, where crisp text and UI is a genuine quality of life improvement.
Tekken 6 and Burnout Legends. Both clean, fast and detailed.
Patapon and LocoRoco. Vector-like flat art with no fixed resolution. These scale perfectly and look immaculate at any multiplier.
Where Texture Packs Help
Higher internal resolution sharpens geometry but leaves textures at their original size, and PSP textures were small by necessity. On some games that produces crisp edges against soft surfaces.
PPSSPP supports texture replacement natively, and packs exist for many of the bigger titles. The work is done offline, so there is no runtime cost beyond loading larger images, and a human curated the results. That is a meaningfully different proposition from live AI processing, which we cover in AI upscaling options that work in emulators.
As always, quality varies. Some packs stay faithful and some add detail the artists never drew.
The Ones That Fight It
Games with heavy pre-rendered video. Full motion video stays at its source resolution, so the jump between sharp gameplay and soft cutscene is more jarring the higher you push. This affects a lot of the JRPG library.
2D and sprite based titles. Anything drawn as sprites rather than rendered as geometry gains nothing from internal resolution. These want integer scaling instead.
Some UI elements stay low resolution. A number of PSP games draw interface elements as fixed bitmaps rather than scaling them. You end up with a sharp world and a soft HUD. PPSSPP mitigates some of this, but not all of it.
Games that were genuinely low detail. Not every PSP game was a Sony first party showcase. Plenty of budget releases had simple assets, and upscaling those just shows you the simplicity more clearly.
The Settings That Actually Matter
1. Internal resolution: 4x or 5x. Be generous. PPSSPP is efficient and the PSP's tiny base resolution means high multipliers are still modest by absolute standards.
2. Match your display, not the maximum. 5x is roughly 1360 lines. Beyond that you are rendering pixels your screen cannot show.
3. Texture scaling is a separate setting from internal resolution. PPSSPP offers algorithmic texture upscaling. It is a matter of taste, and it is not the same as installing a curated pack.
4. Turn on anisotropic filtering. Cheap and it improves angled surfaces noticeably.
5. Check the widescreen setting per game. Some titles handle it well, others stretch.

What This Does Not Do
Raising internal resolution invents nothing. The model data and texture coordinates were always in the game at full precision, and the PSP's screen simply could not show them. You are revealing detail that was already there, which is exactly why the PSP gains so much: there was a lot of detail being hidden.
That is different from AI upscaling and neural rendering, which generate detail that exists nowhere in the source. The fuller argument is in AI upscaling vs preservation.
The Hardware You Need
The best part. PSP upscaling is achievable on almost anything.
On a desktop or PC handheld, 5x is trivial.
On Android handhelds, mid range devices handle 4x to 5x comfortably. The
runs the library at high multipliers without difficulty. On Linux handhelds, 2x to 3x is realistic on stronger devices, which still represents a large improvement over native.

A Note On Playing Your Games
Everything here assumes games you own, dumped from your own UMDs or downloaded from your own PSN account. We only cover playing your own library and supporting game preservation, and we do not link to or discuss ROM download sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do PSP games gain so much from upscaling?
Because the base resolution was only 480x272, so every multiplier does more visible work than on a home console. PSP developers also frequently authored assets at higher quality than the screen could resolve, particularly Sony's first party studios, so there is real hidden detail to reveal.
What internal resolution should I use in PPSSPP?
4x or 5x for most setups. PPSSPP is efficient and the PSP's small base resolution keeps even 5x modest in absolute terms. Match your display rather than maxing the slider, since 5x is already around 1360 lines.
Which PSP game looks best upscaled?
God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta are the standard showcases. Both pushed the hardware far beyond what the screen could display, and at high resolution they look like PS2 games or better. Daxter and Crisis Core are close behind.
Why is the HUD still blurry when I upscale?
Because some PSP games draw interface elements as fixed bitmaps rather than as scalable geometry. Internal resolution affects the rendered 3D world, not those fixed assets. PPSSPP mitigates some cases but not all of them.
Are PPSSPP texture packs worth it?
For the major titles, often yes. Internal resolution sharpens geometry but leaves textures at their original small size, and packs close that gap with no runtime performance cost. Quality varies between packs, so check what one is aiming for before installing.
Can a budget handheld upscale PSP games?
Yes, to a useful degree. PSP is one of the cheapest systems to emulate, so even Linux handhelds often manage 2x to 3x, which is already a large improvement. Mid range Android handhelds reach 4x to 5x comfortably.
Does upscaling change how PSP games look artistically?
Far less than on systems where low resolution was used deliberately. The PSP's small screen was a hardware constraint rather than an artistic choice, so revealing the hidden detail generally matches what the developers were building toward.
