DLSS 5 Is Coming to Handhelds, Just Not the Way You Think

Every time NVIDIA ships something, we get the same question. Will it work on my handheld?
For DLSS features the answer has always been a flat no, and the reason is structural rather than temporary. DLSS needs NVIDIA tensor cores. There is no NVIDIA GPU Windows handheld. There is no credible sign of one coming.
That answer is still correct for local rendering, and it will stay correct.
But NVIDIA's DLSS 5 launch announcement confirmed something we had been careful not to promise: DLSS 5 is on GeForce NOW at launch. And GeForce NOW runs on handhelds.
So from 3 September, for the first time, a Steam Deck can put DLSS 5 output on its screen. It just is not the Steam Deck doing the work.
We want to be straight about our own record here. Our earlier DLSS 5 coverage told readers that GeForce NOW support had not been announced and to treat it as a reasonable guess rather than a plan. That was true when we wrote it. It stopped being true on 1 September, and we have gone back and fixed those articles.
How This Actually Works
Cloud streaming inverts the hardware question entirely.
When you stream a game, your handheld is not rendering anything. It is running a video decoder and sending your button presses up the wire. The rendering happens on a machine in a data centre, and that machine's GPU is the one that matters.
NVIDIA's GeForce NOW Ultimate tier runs on NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080 systems. An RTX 5080 is an RTX 50 series card. RTX 50 series cards are the exact hardware DLSS 5 requires.
So the chain completes. Your Steam Deck asks for a game, an RTX 5080 renders it with DLSS 5 enabled, and the result arrives at your handheld as a video stream. The AMD chip in your device never has to know what neural rendering is.
This is not a workaround or a hack. It is a supported product, confirmed by NVIDIA in the launch announcement.
What You Actually Need
Four things, and one of them is the catch.
1. A GeForce NOW Ultimate subscription. Not the free tier and not the mid tier. DLSS 5 is an Ultimate feature because Ultimate is what puts you on the RTX 5080 rigs. Ultimate runs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year.
2. A supported game that you own. GeForce NOW is a bring your own library service. You connect your Steam, Epic or other store account and stream games you already bought. It is not a Game Pass style buffet.
3. A decent connection. NVIDIA recommends a wired or strong 5GHz Wi-Fi connection for the higher tiers. Streaming is where the real quality variable lives, and no amount of neural rendering survives a bad network.
4. Patience, because of the game list. Here is the catch. At launch, exactly one game supports DLSS 5, and it is NBA 2K27. So the practical answer to "can I stream DLSS 5 to my Steam Deck" is currently "yes, if you want to play basketball."
That will change as studios ship integrations. But we would rather say it plainly than let anyone subscribe expecting a library that does not exist yet.

The good news is that this works on essentially everything, because the requirement is a video decoder rather than a GPU.

Steam Deck is the best case, and by a decent margin. GeForce NOW has a native SteamOS application rather than a browser fallback, and NVIDIA's Blackwell server rollout pushed Steam Deck streaming up to 90 fps. The Deck's controls, screen and battery are also all well matched to streaming.
Windows handhelds work fine but gain less. The ROG Ally X, Xbox Ally X20, Legion Go and Legion C700 all run the standard Windows GeForce NOW client, which is mature and reliable. The catch is that these devices can already render a lot of modern games locally, so the value of streaming is narrower. You are trading local rendering you already paid for against a subscription.
Android handhelds are the sleeper pick. A Retroid Pocket 6 or an Ayn Odin 3 has no chance of rendering a modern AAA game locally, so streaming is not competing with anything. It is pure addition. The GeForce NOW Android app works well on these devices, and the same is true for any Android handheld with the Play Store.
Budget Linux handhelds are out. An Anbernic RG40XXV or a Miyoo Mini Plus has neither the software support nor the network stack for this. That is fine. Those devices are excellent at the job they were built for, and streaming modern AAA games is not it.

The Battery Argument Is The Interesting One
There is a second reason this matters, and it has nothing to do with image quality.
Rendering a demanding game locally is what destroys handheld battery life. Streaming it does not, because decoding video is a fraction of the work. NVIDIA's own figure is roughly 50 percent better battery life when streaming a game versus rendering it locally on the same handheld.
Stack that up. A Steam Deck streaming NBA 2K27 from an RTX 5080 gets image quality the Deck could never produce locally, at frame rates the Deck could never hit locally, while lasting substantially longer on a charge.
That is a genuinely strange result, and it is the strongest argument cloud gaming has ever had on a handheld.
Now The Honest Caveats
We are not going to sell this harder than it deserves.
Streaming is not local rendering. You are watching a compressed video of a game. Compression artifacts, input latency and network variability are all real, and they are exactly the things that a beautiful neural rendering pass does not help with. The prettiest frame in the world still has to survive an H.265 encode and a trip across the internet.
There is one game. Worth repeating. Subscribing to Ultimate today for DLSS 5 specifically means subscribing for NBA 2K27.
The frame rate numbers deserve scrutiny. NVIDIA's headline NBA 2K27 figures use Multi Frame Generation in 6X mode. The RTX 5090's 370 fps at 4K implies an actual render rate closer to 62 fps. Frame generation and streaming interact in ways nobody has independently tested yet, and generated frames plus network latency is not an obviously happy combination. We will look at that once the service is live.
You do not own the setup. A subscription is a subscription. If NVIDIA changes the tiers, the hardware or the game catalogue, your access changes with it.
DLSS 5 costs 50 to 60 percent of the frame rate, by NVIDIA's own admission, even on an RTX 5080. The cloud absorbs that cost instead of your handheld, which is the whole point, but it does not make the cost disappear.
Is There Any Chance Of A Local NVIDIA Handheld?
Not a realistic one, and it is worth explaining why rather than just saying no.
NVIDIA does make handheld class silicon. The Switch 2's Tegra chip is NVIDIA hardware. But that is a bespoke part built for one customer, and it does not have the tensor throughput DLSS 5 requires. Neural rendering currently costs an RTX 5090 close to half its frame rate. Fitting that inside a 15 watt handheld power budget is not a next generation problem, it is a several generations problem.
The PC handheld market has also settled hard on AMD, with MSI's Claw line on Intel. Nobody is shipping an NVIDIA Windows handheld, and no manufacturer has signalled one.

Our Take
Do not subscribe today. One game is not a reason.
But do watch this, because the shape of it is genuinely new. For most of this hobby's history, better graphics meant better hardware in your hands. Cloud streaming breaks that link, and DLSS 5 on GeForce NOW is the clearest example yet. The cheapest Android handheld with a good screen and a Play Store now has access to rendering technology that a $2,000 desktop bought eighteen months ago cannot run.
Whether that is exciting or slightly bleak probably depends on how you feel about owning things. It is definitely interesting.
Check back once a handful of the announced titles actually ship with DLSS 5. That is the point where an Ultimate subscription starts making sense for a handheld owner, and we will test it properly then.
