DLSS 5 Launches September 3 With Exactly One Game

NVIDIA has put a date on DLSS 5. After six months of "Fall 2026" and a week of chaos caused by a leaked pre-release build, the real thing ships on 3 September 2026 at 9pm Pacific.
If you are outside the US, that is the early hours of 4 September where you are. This is why some coverage says the 3rd and some says the 4th. Both are describing the same moment.
The announcement answered most of the open questions from the leak. It also created a few new ones, mainly around what NVIDIA's own performance numbers actually mean.
Here is what was confirmed, what it costs, and the one part of it that genuinely matters to handheld owners.

What "3D-Guided Neural Rendering" Means
NVIDIA has given the technology a proper name, and the name is doing real work.
Earlier DLSS versions reconstructed. You rendered the frame small, the AI rebuilt it large, and you got performance back. The picture was still the picture your game's artists made, just resampled.
DLSS 5 generates. NVIDIA's framing is that it produces "the rich lighting and material details that real-time performance constraints once forced developers to strip away." The rendered frame becomes what NVIDIA calls an "unyielding foundation," and the model adds lighting and material detail on top of it.
Two design decisions are worth knowing about, because they answer the obvious objections.
It is deterministic. Give it the same frame twice and you get the same output twice. That is not how generative image models usually behave, and it is what makes this usable in a game at all.
It is one frame in, one frame out. No lookahead, no accumulation across many frames. That is where the temporal stability comes from, and it is why the modded version ghosts so badly by comparison. The mod is feeding the model guessed data.
It also runs as the final stage of rendering rather than as a separate upscaling pass, which is a meaningful change from how DLSS has been plumbed into engines before.
RTX 50 Only, And NVIDIA Did Not Blink
The official supported hardware list is short. All GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs, including laptop parts. That is it.
No RTX 40. No RTX 30. No RTX 20. NVIDIA's announcement does not mention older generations at all, not even to rule them out.
This is notable because of what happened over the previous week. Modders took the leaked library and got it running on RTX 40, then 30, then 20 series cards by switching the model from FP8 to FP16. We covered how that requirement collapsed at the time.
So there was an obvious question hanging over the launch: would NVIDIA acknowledge that the hardware gate was softer than advertised? The answer is no. NVIDIA has not commented on the mod scene and has not expanded official support.
That is not necessarily cynical. Official support means a supported experience, and an RTX 2060 running a 148 million parameter model in a fallback numeric format is not that. But it does mean the modded route stays the only route for older cards, with all the problems that carries. We compare the two directly in official DLSS 5 versus the leaked mod.
NVIDIA also published recommended pairings, which tell you how it expects the cost to land:

One Game. Not Fifteen.
At launch, exactly one game supports DLSS 5: NBA 2K27.
This is worth being clear about, because a number is circulating that does not mean what people think it means.
Back in March, NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 at GTC alongside a list of titles that would eventually get it. Resident Evil Requiem. Starfield. Hogwarts Legacy. Assassin's Creed Shadows. EA Sports FC. Publishers including Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Games.
That was an intentions list. It had no dates, and it still has no dates. It was never a launch lineup, and several outlets, ourselves included, reported it as though it were. We have corrected that across our earlier DLSS 5 coverage.
What NVIDIA actually says now is that more titles arrive "in the coming weeks and months." No names attached to dates.
NBA 2K27 is also a slightly odd flagship. It is the same game the pre-release library leaked out of last week, which is either an awkward coincidence or a scheduling casualty. NVIDIA's implementation there uses a Pixel Space Diffusion Transformer Model, aimed at skin, hair and lighting on player models while preserving the facial geometry scanned from the real athletes and the game's TV broadcast look.
That last detail matters. The single loudest complaint about the leaked mod was that it turned characters into different people. NBA 2K27's integration is explicitly built to not do that.
The Performance Numbers, And The Asterisk
NVIDIA published frame rate figures for NBA 2K27. They look spectacular. They need reading carefully.

Now the part that is in the footnotes rather than the headline. These were captured with Multi Frame Generation in 6X mode and DLSS Super Resolution set to Performance.
Six frames out for every one rendered. So back the math out:
- The RTX 5090's 370 fps at 4K implies an actual render rate of roughly 62 fps
- The RTX 5080's reported 233 fps figure implies roughly 39 fps rendered
Those are still respectable numbers for 4K with ray tracing and a neural network running every frame. They are not 370 fps in any sense a player would recognise, and presenting a 62 fps game as a 370 fps game is a choice.
To NVIDIA's credit, it is not hiding the underlying cost. The company's own stated performance penalty for DLSS 5 is 50 to 60 percent on average. That is remarkably close to what independent testers measured on the leaked build, where Control fell from 71 to 35 fps on an RTX 5070 Ti. The leak was not misrepresenting the shipping product nearly as much as everyone assumed.
It Got Five Times Faster In Six Months
The optimisation story is the genuinely impressive part, and it got much less coverage than the frame rate arguments.
When NVIDIA first demoed DLSS 5 in March, the model needed two RTX 5090s to run in real time. Two of the most expensive consumer GPUs ever made, for a tech demo.
It now runs on an RTX 5060. NVIDIA says the model is five times faster than that March version, achieved in roughly six months, with a 50 percent gain by around May and a further 2.5x by July.
More optimisation is promised later this year. If the trend holds even partway, the 50 to 60 percent cost is a launch figure rather than a permanent one.
That reframes the whole thing a little. A technology that halves your frame rate today, but which got five times cheaper in half a year, is on a very different trajectory than the launch benchmarks alone suggest.
The Developer Controls Nobody Talks About
Official DLSS 5 integrates through the NVIDIA Streamline framework or an Unreal Engine 5 plugin. Developers get:
- Multiple selectable AI models at different parameter weights, so a studio can trade quality against cost
- Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity sliders, controlling how far the model may push geometry detail and colour
- Semantic AI masking and engine-level masking, which define which parts of a scene the model is allowed to touch at all
That last one is the entire difference between the shipping product and the leaked mod. Injecting the DLL into Skyrim gives the model no masks and no direction, so it redraws faces with total freedom and characters come out looking like strangers. A developer integration tells it to leave the HUD alone, leave the geometry alone, and work on skin and lighting only.
Every criticism aimed at the modded screenshots was really a criticism of running the model without any of this. Whether the shipping version earns a better verdict is a question we can only answer after 3 September.
What Handheld Owners Get
No handheld can run DLSS 5 locally. There is still no NVIDIA GPU Windows handheld, and every device you can buy runs AMD or Intel graphics. That has not changed and is not going to.
What did change is the cloud. DLSS 5 is confirmed for GeForce NOW Ultimate at launch, streaming from NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080 rigs.
GeForce NOW runs natively on the Steam Deck and on Android handhelds. So from 3 September, a handheld can display DLSS 5 output, because the rendering is happening on a Blackwell GPU in a data centre and your device is only decoding video.

We should flag that our earlier coverage said GeForce NOW support had not been announced and told readers to treat it as speculation. That was accurate on 31 August. It is not accurate now, and those articles have been updated.
Should You Care Yet?
If you own an RTX 50 card and you play NBA 2K27, try it. That is a genuinely small group of people.
For everyone else, this is a launch to watch rather than act on. One game, a large performance cost, and a hardware requirement that excludes every GPU older than eighteen months. The interesting version of DLSS 5 is the one that exists after a dozen studios have shipped integrations and the model has had another optimisation pass or two.
The thing we would actually keep an eye on is the GeForce NOW side. If NVIDIA keeps DLSS 5 flowing onto its cloud service as titles adopt it, then a $200 handheld streaming from an RTX 5080 becomes a stranger and more interesting proposition than a $2,000 desktop.
