The experimental DLSS 5 mod is expensive to run. Not in money, in frames.

Since the pre-release neural rendering library leaked out of an NBA 2K27 build last week, people have been benchmarking it, and the numbers are consistent across testers. At 4K you should expect to give up somewhere between a quarter and half of your frame rate.

This article covers what hardware has actually been shown working, what the measured cost is, and the question we get asked most often here: whether any of this touches handheld gaming. That last answer is short.

The Hardware Requirement

RTX 50 series. That is the whole list.

Every working demonstration so far has been on Blackwell cards. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti are the two that have produced published numbers.

The reason RTX 50 keeps coming up is that neural rendering leans on the Blackwell tensor cores and their FP8 throughput. The leaked model carries 148 million FP8 parameters and has to run on every frame. That is a workload the earlier tensor core generations were not built around.

The Performance Cost

These are all from third party testing of the leaked build. Treat them as directional.

Two things stand out.

The cost varies a lot by game. Control loses about half its frame rate. Cyberpunk loses about a quarter. That spread suggests how much of the frame the model is being asked to work on matters more than raw GPU power.

A 5090 does not rescue you. The RTX 5090 lost a similar proportion to the 5070 Ti in the same game. This is a fixed per frame cost, not something you outrun with a bigger card. Buying up the stack gets you a higher starting point, not a smaller penalty.

Also worth saying plainly: this is an unoptimised pre-release build that shipped by accident. Early builds are usually slow. The Fall 2026 release should look different, and these numbers are not a fair verdict on the shipping product.

Everything Else You Would Need

Hardware is not the only gate. Right now the practical requirements also include:

  • A recent NVIDIA driver. Driver support for neural rendering has only started appearing in recent releases.
  • The leaked DLL itself, which we do not link and which was never meant to be distributed.
  • An experimental mod build. The feature is not in any public RenoDX release. There is no supported download.
  • A single player game. Injecting DLLs into anything with anti cheat is a bad idea. We cover why in the risks article.
  • Tolerance for breakage. Reported HDR problems and general instability are common.

Now The Handheld Question

We get asked this every time an NVIDIA feature lands, so here it is directly.

No handheld can run DLSS 5. Not one.

The reason is simple and structural. DLSS is an NVIDIA technology. There is no NVIDIA GPU Windows handheld. Every PC handheld on the market runs AMD, with the MSI Claw line on Intel. Neither vendor can run DLSS at all, let alone the neural rendering layer.

This is not a "wait for the next generation" situation either. It would take an NVIDIA powered handheld existing first, and then that handheld having enough tensor throughput to absorb a cost that currently halves an RTX 5090.

The One Realistic Path: GeForce NOW

There is exactly one way a handheld owner plausibly sees DLSS 5 output, and it is cloud streaming.

GeForce NOW already runs natively on the Steam Deck as a SteamOS app, streaming from NVIDIA's RTX servers at up to 4K60 with HDR10. Because the rendering happens in a data centre, your handheld is only decoding video. NVIDIA's own figure is roughly 50 percent better battery life than rendering the same game locally, which for a Steam Deck is a genuinely large difference.

SteamOS has also spread to non Valve handhelds, so this applies more broadly than it used to.

The logic follows straightforwardly. GeForce NOW servers run RTX hardware. DLSS features arrive there after they ship. DLSS 4.5 ray reconstruction is already exposed as a GeForce NOW setting. So when DLSS 5 launches properly in Fall 2026 and games start integrating it, a Steam Deck streaming one of those games could see the result.

Two caveats. You need a good connection, and you need NVIDIA to actually enable it on the service, which has not been announced.

Should You Do Any Of This?

Honestly, no, not yet.

If you own an RTX 50 card and enjoy tinkering, the appeal is obvious and this is a genuinely interesting thing to have working. But you would be running a leaked, unfinished library, through an unreleased mod, at roughly half frame rate, for a visual change many people actively dislike.

The shipping version is a few months away, will be properly integrated by developers, and will almost certainly run better. Waiting costs you very little.

Not proportionally. The RTX 5090 lost roughly the same percentage as the RTX 5070 Ti in the same game. It is a fixed per frame cost, so a faster card gives you a higher starting frame rate rather than a smaller penalty.

Can the Steam Deck run DLSS 5?

No. The Steam Deck uses AMD RDNA 2 graphics, and DLSS is NVIDIA only. The same applies to the ROG Ally, the ROG Xbox Ally X20, the Legion Go and the Legion C700. The MSI Claw uses Intel Arc and also cannot.

Is there any NVIDIA handheld that could run DLSS 5?

No NVIDIA GPU Windows handheld exists. Even if one launched, DLSS 5 currently costs an RTX 5090 nearly half its frame rate, which is far outside what a handheld power budget could absorb.

Could I stream DLSS 5 to my handheld?

Potentially, through GeForce NOW. It runs natively on the Steam Deck at up to 4K60 HDR10 and already exposes DLSS 4.5 settings, and it improves handheld battery life by around 50 percent because rendering happens in the cloud.
