MagicX has revealed a second handheld built around the custom OLED panel it announced in July. It is called the Pocket Dream, and it is the vertical sibling to the Mini Dream we previewed two months ago.

Same 3.3 inch OLED. Same four chipset variants across Linux and Android. Different shape, and a control layout MagicX describes as joystick-first.

We finally have real dimensions this time, which is more than the Mini Dream reveal gave us. The Pocket Dream is 107 x 72 x 22 mm. Hold that number, because it is the one that decides whether this device works.

72mm Is Narrow

Let us do the arithmetic the reveal is skating past.

The Pocket Dream is 72mm wide. For reference, a Miyoo Mini Plus is roughly 87mm wide and has one D-pad and no analog sticks. A Game Boy Color was about 78mm. The Pocket Dream is narrower than both, and MagicX wants to put two analog sticks on it.

A standard low-profile thumbstick module is around 20mm across at the base. Two of them is 40mm. That leaves roughly 32mm of width for everything else, split between the left and right sides, minus the shell walls. On a vertical device the sticks also have to sit below a 3.3 inch screen, competing for height with a D-pad and four face buttons.

None of that makes it impossible. It makes it tight, and it means the sticks are almost certainly small, close together, and low profile. That is a real design constraint, not a detail.

The upside, if MagicX has solved it: nothing else in this price bracket offers dual sticks in a vertical body. The AYANEO Pocket DMG is the reference for a premium vertical handheld with proper sticks, and it costs several times what a MagicX device will. A cheap vertical handheld that can actually play N64 and PS1 games needing a second stick would be genuinely useful.

The downside, if they have not: two cramped sticks are worse than one good one, and vertical handhelds have historically been better off leaning into the systems that never needed sticks at all.

What the Chipset Tells Us

MagicX says the Pocket Dream uses the same four SoC variants as the Mini Dream, spanning Linux and Android builds. At least one of those is a Rockchip RK3566.

The RK3566 is a known quantity and it sets a clear ceiling. It handles NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Genesis and most of PS1 comfortably. It does not handle Dreamcast, PSP, Saturn or anything above them, and it is nowhere near PS2. Our PS2 emulation guide explicitly lists RK3566 devices as not capable, and that has not changed.

So on the Linux variant at least, this is a 2D and PS1 machine. Which is fine. That is what a 3.3 inch screen is for, and it is where an OLED panel pays off most, because 2D sprite art with bold palettes is exactly the content that benefits from true blacks and per-pixel contrast.

The Android variants are the open question, because MagicX has not named the other three chips. If one of them is meaningfully faster, the emulation ceiling moves. If they are all in the same class, the difference is software features rather than power.

Note the tension, though. Dual analog sticks point at N64, PS1, Dreamcast and PSP, which are the libraries that need a second stick. An RK3566 only reaches the first two of those. The controls are writing a cheque the Linux chipset cannot cash.

Vertical Is Having a Moment

The Pocket Dream is not arriving in a vacuum. The vertical form factor has quietly become one of the more interesting parts of the handheld market.

Read down the sticks column and the pattern is clear. Cheap vertical handhelds do not have analog sticks. The one that does is the premium option. MagicX is trying to put the premium layout on a budget body, which is the interesting bet and also the risky one.

The OLED is the other differentiator. Almost everything under $150 ships with an LCD, and a good IPS panel is perfectly nice. OLED is a step up in a way you notice immediately on retro content. If MagicX has tuned this panel well, both Dream devices look far more expensive than they are.

The Part We Have to Say Out Loud

MagicX announces things that do not ship.

That is not a cheap shot, it is the relevant context. The Mini Dream was revealed in July 2026 and has only just entered what MagicX calls phase two. The company also has a Retro DS clamshell that has been floating around unshipped, which we noted in our clamshell handhelds guide. The Pocket Dream is a render with no price, no date, and no confirmed silicon beyond one chip shared with a device that itself has not launched.

MagicX has also said the design could change based on community feedback, which is a sensible thing for a company to do and a clear signal that nothing here is locked.

Our position: this is worth knowing about and not worth waiting for. Put it on a watch list. Do not delay a purchase over it.

Should You Wait, or Buy Something Now?

Buy the MagicX Zero 40 if you want a cheap vertical handheld now and your library is 2D. It ships, it is around $80, and it does the job the Pocket Dream is aiming at without the sticks. Our DS and 3DS emulation guide covers where it fits.

Buy the AYANEO Pocket DMG if you want a vertical handheld with real analog sticks and real power, and you can afford it. It is the device the Pocket Dream is gesturing at, in a Game Boy DMG inspired shell with an AMOLED panel and enough chip behind it to reach PS2. It is also several times the price. Wait for the Pocket Dream if a budget vertical OLED with two sticks is specifically what you want and nothing else will do. Nobody else is building that. Just understand you may be waiting a long time, or forever.

Look elsewhere if you want the OLED but not the vertical shape. The horizontal Mini Dream uses the same panel and is further along, and for a proven small screen done properly the Analogue Pocket remains in a class of its own.

Our honest read: the OLED is the reason to care and the sticks are the reason to be skeptical. A 72mm body with two thumbsticks is a hard engineering problem, and MagicX has not shown us a solution, just a render. The Mini Dream is the one to watch first, because it has to ship before this one can.
