This morning someone posted a two minute video of Minecraft running inside Elden Ring. By this afternoon it had over six million views, and the games press had picked it up.

It is a great clip. It is also not a thing you can download, and nobody covering it has said so clearly enough.

The same is true of the Minecraft that runs inside Super Mario 64, which is a genuinely impressive piece of engineering and has been unreleased for sixteen months.

So here is the version of this story written for people who own a handheld and want to actually play something. There is a real Minecraft for the Nintendo 64. It is free, it is one megabyte, and it has been on GitHub since 2024.

The Short Version

  • The Elden Ring one: posted 29 September 2026 by Tobyn Jacobs. Claims all 1,600 Minecraft items, working redstone and Creative Mode. No download, no release date, no named modding framework, and no independent verification of any of it.
  • The Mario 64 one: a Minecraft style voxel engine built inside Super Mario 64 by Arthurtilly, shown in May 2025. Real, technically excellent, runs on original N64 hardware. Still no public release.
  • This is not new. Halo 3 got a destructible Minecraft mod in 2022. Doom was running inside Hytale before Hytale shipped.
  • What you can play today: Mine 64, a free homebrew N64 game by SiliconSloth, plus three Minecraft options in PortMaster that run on handhelds as cheap as an RG28XX.

What Was Actually Posted

The post reads, in full:

I put the entire of game minecraft into elden ring as mod. its runs on Mac.

It came with a two minute video. At the time of writing it has around 6.4 million views and 181,000 likes, which is why you have probably already seen it.

The footage shows a Minecraft style interface layered over the Lands Between. There is a Minecraft inventory, Minecraft weapons and tools, and the health, hunger, armour and experience bars from Minecraft sitting over FromSoftware's world. The player fights Elden Ring enemies while all of that stays on screen. Part of it is third person and part of it switches to first person for melee.

Jacobs says the project includes all 1,600 Minecraft items, functional redstone and Creative Mode. Redstone is the load bearing claim there. It is the system that makes Minecraft's automated doors, farms and contraptions work, and rebuilding it inside another engine is a far larger job than importing item models.

What Nobody Has Verified

None of it. That is not a knock on the creator, it is just where the story currently sits.

There is no download link and no release date. Jacobs has not said whether anyone else will ever be able to try it.

No outlet covering this has named a modding framework. Elden Ring modding normally runs through well known tooling, and a project of this scope would have to sit on top of something. Nobody has said what. We are not going to guess, because guessing is how a rumour becomes a fact.

The creator has no public modding history. His own bio and Dexerto's write-up both describe him as someone who makes giant paper art and cutouts. That does not make the mod fake, plenty of people build one remarkable thing and nothing else, but it does mean there is no back catalogue to check this against.

And then there is the last line of the post. Elden Ring has no native Mac version. So "its runs on Mac" is either shorthand for something specific, like a translation layer setup, or it is part of the joke. Dexerto flagged the same thing, calling it notable "despite Elden Ring's demanding PC requirements." The Russian outlet iXBT dropped the Mac claim from its coverage entirely.

Dexerto hedged the whole article, writing "seemingly brought" and "if Jacobs' claims hold up." That hedging is correct and it is getting stripped out as the clip gets reposted.

We are reporting a viral video. We have not tested anything, because there is nothing to test.

The Mario 64 One Is Real, and It Is Sixteen Months Old

The other half of this trend deserves better treatment than it is getting, because it is the opposite case. It is verifiable, it is genuinely hard, and it is old news being recirculated as new.

Arthurtilly, who made the Mario 64 Randomizer and co-created Mario Builder 64, built a Minecraft style voxel engine inside Super Mario 64's engine. He showed it in May 2025.

The constraint is what makes it impressive. The Nintendo 64 has 8MB of RAM. The whole thing has to fit in that, on hardware from 1996, while generating an infinite world. He solved it with multithreading, spreading terrain and mesh generation across multiple frames so nothing stalls. At the time of the demo it had multiple block types and shapes including slabs, biomes covering lava, snow, desert, ocean and mountains, early water and lava, and ambient occlusion.

It runs on a real Nintendo 64. Not an emulator, the actual console.

The planned list included a day and night cycle, flowing fluids, saving and loading worlds on console, trees and vegetation, and an inventory.

Sixteen months later there is still no download. No patch, no release, and nothing resembling a voxel engine among the twelve public repositories on his GitHub account. His recent commits are on other projects. It may well still be in progress and it may still arrive. It is simply not something you can play.

Worth knowing, because these two get mixed up constantly: Arthurtilly's project is built inside Super Mario 64 and has never been released. Mine 64, below, is a separate game by a different person and you can download it right now.

This Is a Genre, Not a Moment

The reason this feels like a sudden trend is that two clips landed near each other. The practice is years old.

Halocraft, 2022. InfernoPlus, best known for Cursed Halo, rebuilt Minecraft style maps inside Halo 3 on the Master Chief Collection. The clever part was not the look, it was making the blocks genuinely destructible inside Halo's Havok physics engine, which was never designed for that. He also put Halo inside Dark Souls the year before, starting by recreating Blood Gulch.

Doom inside Hytale, 2026. Modder tr7zw got Doom running entirely within a Hytale mod before Hytale had even released.

Ocarina of Time inside Minecraft. Rebuilt over roughly seven years by a creator working alone, map, items and quests, and released free.

The pattern is always the same. Someone picks a host engine that has no business running the guest game, and does it anyway. It is a demo of skill first and a playable thing second, if at all.

Which is exactly why the handheld question is worth asking separately.

The Minecraft You Can Actually Play on a Handheld

Here is the part nobody is writing, and it is the one that matters if you own a cheap handheld.

Mine 64

Mine 64 is a Minecraft clone written for the Nintendo 64 by SiliconSloth. It is not a Mario 64 hack. It is its own homebrew game, MIT licensed, and the source is public.

The current release is v1.2.0, published 2 February 2025. The download is a single file, mine64.n64, and it is 1,052,680 bytes. That is one megabyte for a Minecraft.

What you get is close to Minecraft Classic. A 64 by 64 by 32 world, so 131,072 blocks, with a decent world generator. Nine block types: cobblestone, sand, wood, leaves, planks, brick, dirt, stone and grass. Building sandbox only, so no crafting and no furnace.

Two practical notes. Saving works on a flash cart, where it writes a 64k save into a mine64 folder. On an emulator you use a save state instead.

The important bit for this site: it is a normal N64 ROM. Any handheld that emulates the Nintendo 64 will run it, which these days is most of them. And because it is homebrew with no Nintendo code in it, there is nothing legally awkward about downloading it from the project's own GitHub releases page.

The Three PortMaster Options

PortMaster carries three separate routes to blocky building on cheap ARM handhelds.

PortWhat it isWhat you supplyDevices
ClassiCubeA Minecraft Classic compatible client written in C from scratchNothing, it is ready to run39
Luanti / MinecloniaThe open source voxel engine formerly called Minetest, running a Minecraft like gameNothing, it is ready to run39
Minecraft JavaActual Minecraft Java Edition, versions 1.7.10 and 1.12 with ForgeYour own game files, copied from a PC where you own and have launched it28

The device counts are the interesting part. ClassiCube and Luanti cover the same 39 devices and reach right down to the RG28XX. Minecraft Java proper covers 28 and skips the smallest hardware, including the RG28XX, the RG35XX Plus, the RG34XX H and the TrimUI Brick.

We have written the full setup for all four of these, including which device falls on which side of that line, in how to play Minecraft on a retro handheld.

The Bottom Line

The Elden Ring clip is fun and you should enjoy it as a clip. Treat the 1,600 items and the working redstone as claims until someone other than the creator has run it, and do not wait up for a download.

The Mario 64 voxel engine is the better piece of work and it is a year and a half old. If it ships it will be a genuine event, because a Minecraft that fits in 8MB and runs on original hardware would also run on every handheld you own.

Until then, the honest answer to "can I play Minecraft on my retro handheld" is yes, four different ways, and none of them involve Elden Ring.

Questions People Ask

Can I download the Minecraft Elden Ring mod?

No. Tobyn Jacobs posted video of it on 29 September 2026 but has not shared a download link or a release date, and has not confirmed whether it will ever be released publicly.

Is the Minecraft in Elden Ring mod real?

Nobody outside the creator has verified it. The video is real and shows a Minecraft interface and inventory layered over Elden Ring. The specific claims of 1,600 items, working redstone and Creative Mode come only from the creator, no outlet has tested it, and no modding framework has been named. The creator has no documented prior mods.

Does the Minecraft Elden Ring mod really run on Mac?

That claim comes from one line of the creator's own post and has not been verified. Elden Ring has no native Mac version, so it would require something else going on underneath. One outlet covering the story dropped the Mac claim entirely.

Can I play the Minecraft Super Mario 64 mod?

Not yet. Arthurtilly demonstrated the voxel engine in May 2025 and it runs on real N64 hardware, but as of September 2026 there is no public download, no patch and no public repository for it.

Is Mine 64 the same as the Minecraft Mario 64 mod?

No, and they get confused constantly. Mine 64 is standalone N64 homebrew by SiliconSloth, released in April 2024 and updated to v1.2.0 in February 2025, and you can download it. Arthurtilly's project is a voxel engine built inside Super Mario 64 and has never been released.

Will Mine 64 run on my handheld?

If your handheld emulates the Nintendo 64, yes. It is a standard 1MB N64 ROM. Most current retro handhelds handle N64 to some degree, and Mine 64 is far lighter than commercial N64 games.

Yes. It is original homebrew released under the MIT licence with its source code public. It contains no Nintendo code or assets, so it is nothing like downloading a commercial ROM.

What is the easiest way to play Minecraft on a cheap handheld?

ClassiCube through PortMaster. It is ready to run, needs no game files from you, and is available on 39 devices including very inexpensive ones. Luanti gets you closer to modern Minecraft and is also ready to run.

Written 29 September 2026. Elden Ring mod details come from Tobyn Jacobs' post on X and Dexerto's coverage, both retrieved 29 September 2026, and are the creator's claims rather than tested facts. Arthurtilly's voxel engine details come from Time Extension's May 2025 write-up. Mine 64 version, file size and release dates come from the GitHub API for SiliconSloth/Mine64, and PortMaster device availability comes from the project's ports.json, both retrieved 29 September 2026. We have not tested the Elden Ring or Super Mario 64 projects, because neither has been released.
