Yesterday we wrote that the viral Minecraft in Elden Ring clip has no download and nobody has verified it. That is still true.

The other clip going round this week is the opposite case, and it is being treated the same way, which is the problem. Someone posted a video of a Call of Duty soldier kickflipping off a roof on Rust. It did 6.7 million views. A lot of people decided it was AI generated video.

It is not. You can download it right now, it is Apache licensed, and the source is on GitHub.

The reason so many people called fake on it is funnier than the mod. The person who posted the viral clip is the person who built the thing, and his post was a joke about AI taking over.

The Short Version

  • It is real and released. Three releases in three days, the latest on 29 September 2026, with roughly 3,400 downloads between them.
  • It is not a mod. It runs on IW4L, a from scratch rewrite of Modern Warfare 2 in Rust. You launch iw4l.exe, not MW2.
  • Skate and Minecraft are the same project. One download gives you MW2 multiplayer, a Skate 3 mode on any map, and an endless Minecraft world you fight through with MW2 guns.
  • You bring your own games. MW2 on PC, and for skating the extracted default.xex from your own Xbox 360 copy of Skate 3. No game files ship with it.
  • It is Windows x64 only. So the handheld answer is a Steam Deck through Proton, not an Anbernic.
  • The creator has a long public back catalogue. That is the single biggest difference between this and the Elden Ring story.

What Is Actually Running

This is the part every outlet got wrong, and it matters because it changes what you need to install.

IW4L is a standalone Call of Duty runtime written from scratch in Rust, built on bevy and wgpu. It is by vladtrc, it started on 13 September 2026, and it is Apache 2.0. It does not patch Modern Warfare 2. It loads MW2's own data into its own engine and runs the game itself.

The viral project is a fork of that by chasmlol, called 2010 Rust Rewrite Mashup. It adds two things on top: Skate 3's skating, and a Minecraft world as a playable map.

So when you see this described as "a mod for Modern Warfare 2," that is not what it is. There is no mod folder and nothing gets injected into MW2. You extract a zip, run iw4l.exe, and point it at your MW2 install so it can read the game data. Your game folders are never modified.

That distinction is not pedantry. A mod breaks every time the host game patches. A standalone runtime that reads your data does not, which is a large part of why this one actually shipped when the famous ones never do.

One small correction while we are here. Dexerto's headline said Skate 2. The project's own README, its NOTICE file and its documentation all say Skate 3, and the requirement is specifically the Xbox 360 release of Skate 3. Everything else in that write up holds up.

The Skate Half

Press J on any MW2 map and your soldier drops onto a board.

The skating is not an approximation. The physics, animation graph and grind code come from SK8-ENGINE's skate-3-rust-engine, a Rust and Bevy project built on Skate 3 reverse engineering research, pinned at a specific commit. It runs as a worker that the soldier hands control to.

Two pieces of that are genuinely clever.

Retargeting. A rig layer maps Skate 3's skater bones onto the MW2 soldier skeleton. A character model built to hold a rifle ends up doing flick it tricks.

Rails from nothing. MW2's maps were built in 2009 and have no grind rails in them, because nobody was skating. So the mod reads each map's collision geometry, finds every walkable edge where the ground drops away and nothing rises above it, then merges and chains those edges into rails. It generates the skate park out of level geometry that was never meant to be one.

You need a controller for skating. Skate 3's flick it controls do not map to a keyboard.

The Minecraft Half

The Minecraft world arrived in v0.2.0 on 28 September, one day after the skate clip went viral.

It is a real, endless Minecraft 26.3 world, generated by MinecraftOSS, a Rust Minecraft engine. Five of its crates sit in the fork's tree. What you get:

  • Minecraft's own world generation, day and night cycle, sky, clouds and lighting. The lighting falls on your gun.
  • Vanilla mobs, passive and hostile. You can shoot them and they shoot back, in the sense that they come at you.
  • Blocks break when you shoot them, and harder blocks take more bullets, scaled by each gun's real MW2 damage and range. Grenades behave like TNT.
  • Broken blocks drop items you pick up.
  • A Minecraft inventory and hotbar restyled in MW2's UI. Your guns sit in the hotbar as items, and your MW2 character stands in the inventory window.
  • Minecraft's block, mob and footstep sounds.
  • Unlimited ammo, no time limit, and the Intervention, SPAS-12 and UMP45 always in your inventory.
  • Skate mode works in here too, with full block collision.

You do not need Minecraft installed. On first run the game downloads Minecraft 26.3's own textures, sounds and world data straight from Mojang's servers, the same way the official launcher does. That is about 125 MB, cached locally, and after that it plays offline. Nothing from Minecraft is redistributed in the repository.

That is the same approach the good preservation projects take, and it is why this is not the kind of thing that vanishes overnight.

What You Actually Need

Here is the honest requirements list, because the clips skip it.

PartRequirement
The gameA Windows x64 PC. That is the only release build.
MW2Your own PC copy with multiplayer files. Only the Steam version is tested.
Skate 3 modeThe extracted default.xex from your own Xbox 360 copy, with its data folder beside it. ISO files do not work. Plus an XInput controller.
Minecraft mapAn internet connection the first time, and curl, which ships with Windows 10 and 11.
Minecraft itselfNot required.

The Skate 3 requirement is the real wall. default.xex is the executable in the root of the Skate 3 disc, and it never comes on its own. You get it by extracting your own copy, either from a disc ISO using extract-xiso, or out of a Games on Demand container from a 360 hard drive. If you skip it, everything else still works and skating is just switched off.

That is a lot more friction than "download a mod," and it is the reason most people reposting the clip will never run this.

Why People Thought It Was AI Slop

Two reasons, and both are worth understanding, because this is going to keep happening.

The first is the post itself. The clip that went viral was posted by chasm on 27 September with the text "AI HACKERS HAVE PUT SKATEBOARDING IN CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE 2," in caps, tagging a list of AI executives. It is a joke, posted by the guy who wrote the code. It now has 6.7 million views. Strip the context and it reads like an accusation that the video is synthetic.

The second is that AI really is involved, just not in the video. The repository ships an AGENT.md, which is the instruction file you write for AI coding agents, and it has a commit adding an LLM notice. A traversal system like the rail generator would normally be a team's quarterly project, and this one landed in a few dozen commits.

We have written before that an AGENTS.md file on its own is not evidence of AI authorship, and that still holds. The difference here is that the project says so itself rather than leaving you to infer it. That is disclosure, and in the recomp scene disclosure has turned out to be a decent quality signal rather than a red flag.

The important thing is the distinction. AI assisted code that produces a working, licensed, downloadable build is not the same thing as an AI generated video of a build that does not exist. This week produced both, and they are getting filed under the same headline.

If you want the method for telling them apart, we wrote it up separately in is that viral mod video real.

The Track Record Test

Yesterday's piece on the Elden Ring clip flagged that its creator has no public modding history, and that this is not an accusation, just a missing data point.

This project is the control case for that test.

chasmlol's public repositories go back to April 2026 and they are almost all Skate 3: a Rust and Bevy Skate 3 preservation project, a trick toolkit doing recomp research and Blender animation tooling, a Skate 3 recomp build, a self hostable custom maps catalogue, a stick flick speed mod for RPCS3, and rexglue-sdk, an Xbox 360 recompilation runtime and toolkit. There is also a Fallout New Vegas neural rendering host and a local first AI backend for game NPCs.

In other words, the person who put Skate 3 into Modern Warfare 2 has spent six months building Skate 3 tooling and Xbox 360 recompilation infrastructure. The mashup is what that work was for.

That is what a back catalogue looks like, and it is the cheapest check a reader can run. It takes one click on a creator's profile. It does not prove a specific claim is true, but the absence of one is the single most common feature of clips that turn out to be nothing.

If the recompilation side of this interests you, our decomp and recomp explainer covers what tools like ReXGlue actually do, and the recompiled games list tracks what has shipped.

The Handheld Angle

Being straight about this: it is Windows x64 only, and it needs a retail MW2 install on the same machine.

That puts it in Steam Deck territory through Proton, the way you would run any Windows only PC game, and nowhere near an ARM handheld. There is no PortMaster route here and there is not going to be one. This is not a lightweight port, it is a full engine.

Nobody has published Deck results for it yet, so we are not going to invent any. If you try it, the thing to watch is that v0.3.1's own release notes admit the frame rate dropped versus v0.2.0 in bot matches, with a stutter every game tick, because MW2's own game scripts now run the match. That is an upstream IW4L change, not a Deck problem, but it is the kind of thing that hits a handheld hardest.

If your interest in this is the Minecraft half and you want blocky building on a device you actually carry, that exists today and has nothing to do with Call of Duty. How to play Minecraft on a retro handheld covers four working routes, two of which install in about a minute on hardware as cheap as an RG28XX.

The Honest Caveats

The project lists these itself, which is a good sign, and they are worth knowing before you spend an evening extracting an Xbox 360 executable.

  • Frame rate in v0.3.1 is lower than v0.2.0 in matches with bots, with a small stutter every game tick. It comes from IW4L upstream.
  • If you die in skater mode, bodies pile up.
  • The skateboard is invisible on some maps.
  • In the Minecraft world, block edges are not grind rails yet. The rail generator works on MW2 maps, not on voxels.
  • There are 21 open issues, and v0.3.1 exists because v0.3.0 quit at startup on some copies of MW2.

This is a three day old project moving fast. Treat it that way.

The Bottom Line

The skate clip is real, the Minecraft clip is the same project, and both are a download away if you have a Windows PC, MW2 and the patience to extract a 360 disc.

The Elden Ring clip from yesterday is still unverified with no download. Nothing about this week changes that.

And the lesson sitting in the middle of the two is that "is it AI" is the wrong question. The useful questions are whether there is a repository, whether there is a release, and whether the person has built anything before. All three take about a minute to check.

Questions People Ask

Is the Skate mod in Modern Warfare 2 real?

Yes. It is a released project called 2010 Rust Rewrite Mashup, on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence, with three Windows builds published between 28 and 29 September 2026. The viral video is genuine footage of it, and it was posted by the person who built it.

Is it AI generated video?

No. The video shows real software you can download. The project does use AI coding agents and says so, shipping an AGENT.md file and an LLM notice, but that is AI assisted code rather than synthetic video.

Is it actually a Modern Warfare 2 mod?

No, and this is what most coverage got wrong. It runs on IW4L, a from scratch rewrite of Modern Warfare 2 in Rust built on bevy and wgpu. You launch its own executable and point it at your MW2 folder so it can read the game data. MW2 itself is never modified.

What do I need to play it?

A Windows x64 PC and your own PC copy of Modern Warfare 2, with the Steam version being the tested one. For Skate 3 mode you also need the extracted default.xex from your own Xbox 360 copy of Skate 3, with its data folder, plus a controller. ISO files will not work.

Do I need Minecraft installed?

No. On first run the game downloads Minecraft 26.3's textures, sounds and world data from Mojang's own servers, about 125 MB, then plays offline. No Minecraft files are included in the download.

Is it Skate 2 or Skate 3?

Skate 3. One widely shared headline said Skate 2, but the project's README, NOTICE and documentation all specify Skate 3, and specifically the Xbox 360 release.

Will it run on a Steam Deck?

Probably, through Proton, since it is a Windows x64 build like any other PC game, but nobody has published results yet and we have not tested it. Bear in mind the latest release's own notes report a frame rate drop and a per tick stutter in bot matches, which is the sort of thing a handheld feels first.

Will it run on an Anbernic or a Retroid?

No. It is a Windows x64 build of a full 3D engine that needs a retail MW2 install on the same machine. There is no ARM build and no PortMaster port.

The runtime is Apache 2.0 licensed and ships no game files. It requires you to own Modern Warfare 2 and, for skating, your own copy of Skate 3, and it downloads Minecraft's files from Mojang rather than redistributing them. That puts it in the same position as most large mods and preservation projects, which is a grey area rather than a settled one.
