Why N64 Is So Hard

The problem is not the CPU. It is the graphics chip.

The N64's Reality Display Processor was a programmable piece of hardware, and studios wrote their own custom microcode for it. That means there is no single correct way to draw an N64 frame. Emulators have to either guess at a high level or simulate the chip properly.
