Game Freak stopped making Battle Frontiers after Platinum. Fan developers have been filling that hole for fifteen years, usually by bolting a facility onto the end of a long story mode you have to play through first.
Pokémon World Frontier skips the story. It is an island of battle facilities and nothing else, it came out free on 23 October 2026, and it ships a day one Android build.
That last detail is the one this site cares about, because it is unusual for a fan game of this type and it decides which handhelds can actually run it.
The Short Version
- Released free on 23 October 2026 for Windows, Linux, Mac and Android.
- Eight battle facilities, each with a different ruleset.
- Beat all eight and you unlock the World Stadium, which is where the famous trainers are. Rivals and Champions from across the series.
- The creator counts nine challenges. That is the eight facilities plus the Stadium, which is worth knowing because "nine facilities" is how it gets repeated.
- The complete Pokédex through generation 9. Every Pokémon, and you edit your team before each battle rather than grinding one.
- Every battle mechanic. Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax and Terastallization are all in.
- Built in Pokémon Essentials 21.1. The Windows and Linux build is about 1.09 GB.
- Published under the Sky Fangames label, with the launch trailer shown at the Fangames Showcase on 26 September 2026.
- Hardware: fine on PC, Mac and Steam Deck. Works on Android handhelds through a dedicated player app. Not available on cheap Linux handhelds and no port has been announced.
What the Eight Facilities Actually Are
The interesting design choice here is that the facilities are not reskins of each other. Each one changes a rule.
- Battle Tower. Classic one on one singles. The baseline.
- Battle Castle. Battles overseen by a judge.
- Battle Temple. A roguelike run format.
- Battle Cathedral. Inverse battles, where the entire type chart is flipped.
- Battle Victini. Battles with randomness thrown in.
- Battle Fortress. Rotation battles.
- Battle Cruise. Rental Pokémon only.
- Battle Stadium. Doubles.
Clear all eight and the World Stadium opens. That is the endgame, and it is stocked with major rivals and Champions from across the main series. This is the "fight famous trainers" part, and it is gated behind the rest rather than available from the start.
So the count that gets repeated as nine facilities is really eight plus the Stadium finale. The creator's own framing is nine challenges, which is accurate. Eight facilities is the number if you are talking about the facilities themselves.
Why the Pokédex Scope Matters Here
"Every Pokémon through generation 9" sounds like a bullet point. In a Battle Frontier game it is the whole design.
A normal Pokémon game makes you earn a team. A Frontier game is about team building as a puzzle, and the usual fan game version of that is ruined by a limited roster or by hours of preparation before you can test an idea. World Frontier gives you the full dex and lets you edit your team on the fly before each battle.
Combined with every mechanic being available, that means Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax and Terastallization all coexist, which no official game has ever done. Four generations of gimmicks in one battle system is a genuinely different competitive sandbox, and it is the reason this is worth a look even if you have played a dozen fan Frontiers.
There is also a Mystery Gift system that pulls distribution files from an online source, so the roster of giveaways can change after launch.
Now the Hardware Question
This is where most coverage of fan games stops being useful. Here is the version sorted by what you own.
PC, Mac and Steam Deck: yes, no caveats worth mentioning
The native Windows, Linux and Mac builds are the intended way to play, and an Essentials game is not demanding. Any laptop from the last decade handles it.
On a Steam Deck, run the Windows build through Proton. Essentials games are generally well behaved under Proton, and there is a native Linux build as well, which makes this one of the easier fan games to get going on a Deck. Add it as a non Steam game and it works like anything else.
Android handhelds: yes, and this is the notable part
The game ships Android support on day one, which most Essentials fan games do not.
It runs through NaviaXP, an Android player built specifically for fan games made in Pokémon Essentials and RPG Maker XP. It released on 10 August 2026, needs Android 6.0 or newer, and you add a game by pointing it at the folder that contains the project's Game.ini file.
That is a meaningful upgrade on the usual Android route. The standard option has always been JoiPlay, which works but is a general purpose RPG Maker launcher, was removed from the Google Play Store, and has hit and miss compatibility with any specific game. A player built for Essentials specifically, with a game that is tested against it, is a much shorter path.
For a retro handheld audience that matters, because an Android handheld with real controls is a far better way to play a Frontier game than a phone. You are doing hundreds of menu driven battles and a physical d pad and buttons beat a touchscreen overlay every time.
An Essentials game needs almost nothing in the way of performance, so you do not need a flagship chip for this. Any Android handheld will run it. Spend your money on the screen and the controls instead.
Cheap Linux handhelds: not today, and do not wait for it
If you have an Anbernic RG35XX, an RG40XX, a Miyoo Mini or a TrimUI, the answer right now is no. There is no build for those devices and no port has been announced.
We checked PortMaster's own port list rather than guessing, and there is no Pokémon World Frontier entry.
But the precedent is real, which is why this is a "not yet" rather than a "never". Pokémon Reborn and Pokémon Rejuvenation are both official PortMaster ports, and both are Pokémon Essentials games running through mkxp-z, the same engine family World Frontier is built on. So the technical route exists and has been walked twice. Both of those ports are also flagged as needing a more powerful device, which tells you where the floor sits.
What is missing is somebody doing the work. Ports happen because a volunteer decides to do one, and nothing has been announced here. Treat it as possible rather than coming.

Do Not Confuse This With Pokémon Monomyth
There were two Battle Frontier fan game stories in October 2026 and they are getting mixed together.
Pokémon Monomyth is a different project. It is a full region game, around six years in development, advertising over 75 hours of gameplay across a new region called Athanto, over 360 new and returning Pokémon, Contest Halls, Trainer Hill and multiplayer. It also includes a Battle Frontier, which is why coverage of it reads so similarly.
The difference that matters: Monomyth is not out. As of October 2026 it is described as releasing at some point in the near future, with no date. World Frontier is the one you can download today.
If you read a headline in October 2026 about a new Pokémon release bringing back the Battle Frontier, it could have been either one. Check which.
One Caution Before You Download
Fan games get taken down. Not often, not predictably, but it happens, and Nintendo has issued takedowns against Pokémon fan projects that got large enough to notice.
Practical advice, which is the same advice we give on every fan game article. If you download a build and you like it, keep the copy you downloaded. A project that disappears takes its download page with it, and nothing about the copy on your drive stops working.
Also worth saying plainly: this is a free fan project, it is not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company, and nobody should be charging you for it. Anything asking for payment or an account is not the real thing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many facilities does Pokémon World Frontier have?
Eight battle facilities, each with its own ruleset: Battle Tower, Battle Castle, Battle Temple, Battle Cathedral, Battle Victini, Battle Fortress, Battle Cruise and Battle Stadium. Clearing all eight unlocks the World Stadium, which is why the creator describes the game as having nine challenges. If you see "nine facilities" repeated, that count is including the Stadium.
Does Pokémon World Frontier have every Pokémon?
Yes, the complete Pokédex through generation 9 is available for team building, and you can edit your team before each battle rather than training one up. Every battle mechanic is included too, so Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax and Terastallization all exist in the same game.
Which famous trainers are in Pokémon World Frontier?
Major rivals and Champions from across the main series, and they are found in the World Stadium. That is the endgame content, so it unlocks after you clear all eight facilities rather than being available from the start.
Can I play Pokémon World Frontier on Android?
Yes. The game ships Android support on launch, through NaviaXP, a player app built for Pokémon Essentials and RPG Maker XP fan games. It needs Android 6.0 or newer, and you add the game by pointing it at the folder containing the project's Game.ini file. This is a cleaner route than JoiPlay, which is the general purpose option most Essentials games rely on.
Can I play Pokémon World Frontier on an Anbernic or Miyoo handheld?
Not currently. There is no build for those devices, and PortMaster's port list has no entry for it. A port is technically plausible, because Pokémon Reborn and Pokémon Rejuvenation are both PortMaster ports of Essentials games using the same engine family, but nobody has announced one for this and both of those ports need a higher powered device.
Does Pokémon World Frontier work on a Steam Deck?
Yes. There is a native Linux build, and the Windows build runs under Proton, which Essentials games generally handle well. Add it as a non Steam game and it behaves like any other title.
Is Pokémon World Frontier a ROM hack?
No. It is a standalone fan game built in Pokémon Essentials 21.1, which is an RPG Maker XP framework. There is no patch file, no base game and nothing to dump from a cartridge. You download a build and run it.
Is Pokémon World Frontier free?
Yes, it is a free fan project and nobody should be charging for it. It is not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
Is Pokémon World Frontier the same game as Pokémon Monomyth?
No, they are two different projects and the similarity is causing confusion. Monomyth is a full region game with around six years of development behind it, over 75 hours of content and its own Battle Frontier, and it is not released yet. World Frontier is the Frontier only game that came out on 23 October 2026.
How long is Pokémon World Frontier?
There is no story mode to finish, so length depends on you. Eight facilities with distinct rulesets plus a Champion gauntlet at the end is the content, and a Frontier game's real length is however long you keep building teams for it.
