The jailbroken PS5 has had an extraordinary autumn. It plays PS2 discs from its own drive. It runs Switch games natively. It runs Wii U, 3DS and DS games in one launcher. It runs Windows games. There is a working app store for it.

Every single one of those stories has the same footnote, and the footnote has become the story.

All of it needs firmware 13.60 or lower. Sony closed that door on 16 September, before the exploit behind this wave was even published. Two weeks later it made a newer firmware the minimum version for PlayStation Network. The result is a gate that is not just shut, but costly to stand on the wrong side of.

Nobody is writing this part up, so here it is in one place.

The Short Version

  • The exploit behind all of it is Relapse. It covers firmware 7.00 through 13.60, on every model including the Slim and the Pro, from the console's own web browser.
  • Sony closed it in firmware 14.00 on 16 September 2026, which shipped roughly two weeks before Relapse was published. Plenty of consoles were already past it on day one.
  • A PS5 cannot be downgraded. Whether yours qualifies was decided for you, by whenever it last updated itself.
  • Firmware 14.10, on 1 October, made itself the minimum version for PlayStation Network. A console on 13.60 now has no PSN, no store, no online play and no cloud saves. Permanently.
  • Firmware 14.20 followed on 21 October, a small update that is reported to have closed the next hole too.
  • A kernel exploit for 14.00 and 14.10 exists and is private. It is called Prolapse, and even if it were released it would not be enough, because the separate hypervisor bypass this homebrew needs still stops working after 13.60.
  • The BootROM key leak does not change this. It was ten months ago. There is still no public route onto firmware 14.
  • The jailbreak is tethered. It does not survive a cold boot. You re-run the exploit every time.
  • So the practical answer is almost always no, and that is why every piece we write about this ends up pointing at a handheld.

What Relapse Opened, and When

A PS5 jailbreak has two halves. An entry point, where the console first runs code it should not, and a kernel exploit behind it that takes over the system so a homebrew enabler can load.

Relapse is the kernel half, reached through the console's own web browser, and its range is wide: firmware 7.00 up to 13.60, on the original PS5, the Slim and the Pro. That breadth is why the whole homebrew scene lit up at once this autumn. It was the first exploit in a long time that covered a firmware a normal, regularly updated console might actually have been sitting on.

The older routes still exist for older consoles, and they are worth knowing if you have a second PS5 in a cupboard:

RouteFirmwareWhat it needs
Browser, UMTX1.00 to 5.50Nothing extra
YouTube app, Lapse4.03 to 10.01An old version of the YouTube app
YouTube app, P2JB9.00 to 12.40, some reports higherAn old version of the YouTube app
Blu-ray disc, UMTX2up to 7.61A disc drive and a burned disc
Blu-ray disc, Poopsploitup to 12.00A disc drive and a burned disc
Browser, Relapse7.00 to 13.60Nothing extra, every model
None public14.00 and newerSee below

Note the timing, because it is the cruel part. Firmware 14.00 went out on 16 September 2026 and closed the hole Relapse uses. Relapse itself was published around 29 September. The patch arrived before the exploit did.

Any console that took that September update, which is to say most consoles that are plugged into the internet with automatic updates on, was never eligible. There is no path back down. Sony has never shipped a PS5 downgrade and the hardware does not permit one.

The Part That Actually Hurts: Firmware 14.10

If the story ended at "your console is probably on the wrong version," this would be an ordinary jailbreak story. It does not.

On 1 October 2026, Sony shipped firmware 14.10 and tied PlayStation Network authentication to a minimum version. The check happens on Sony's side. A console running anything older than 14.10 is not refused a feature here or there, it is refused the network.

Think about what that means for someone holding at 13.60 to keep homebrew.

  • No PlayStation Network sign in.
  • No PlayStation Store, so no new purchases and no re-downloading what you already own.
  • No online multiplayer in anything.
  • No cloud saves.
  • No trophies syncing, no friends list, no messages.
  • And a growing pile of new releases that require newer firmware than you are allowed to install.

That last point is the squeeze. Game firmware requirements only ever go up. A console frozen on 13.60 in October 2026 gets gradually less able to run new PS5 games at all, while the emulation library on it stays exactly as good as it is today.

Firmware 14.20 followed on 21 October, a roughly 1.2 GB update whose public notes only mention improved messaging and usability. Reporting suggests it also closed the vulnerability behind the next exploit attempt, which tells you how fast this is moving.

So the real question is not "can I jailbreak my PS5." It is "would I give up PlayStation Network forever to run Nintendo emulators on it." For almost everyone, written down plainly like that, the answer is no.

Prolapse Is Real, Private, and Would Not Be Enough

In the week of 20 October, reports appeared of a new kernel exploit for firmware 14.00 and 14.10, named Prolapse, built on a memory management flaw in a system call that handles asynchronous file operations.

Three things about it, in order of how much they matter.

It is private. It has not been released, and the researcher reported to be behind it has a long history of keeping findings back, on the reasonable theory that publishing accelerates the patch. Reported progress is not a download. We have been burned by that distinction before and we are not going to restate it as a route.

Firmware 14.20 is reported to have closed it anyway, three weeks after the firmware it targets.

And even released, it would not get you here. This is the detail that almost everyone covering Prolapse skipped, and it is the one that matters most for emulation. A kernel exploit is only half the chain. Running the kind of homebrew this autumn is about also needs a hypervisor bypass, and the bypass the scene uses does not work on anything after 13.60. Kernel access on 14.10 without it gets you a long way from a working emulator.

Which is to say: 13.60 is not merely the newest firmware with a public exploit. It is the newest firmware where the complete chain exists. That is a structural ceiling, not a race Sony is narrowly winning.

What About the BootROM Leak?

This comes up every time, so let us deal with it.

At the very end of December 2025, cryptographic keys said to come from the PS5's boot ROM were published. Because boot ROM lives in silicon rather than firmware, keys from it cannot be changed by any update, on any of the roughly 95 million consoles already sold. The coverage in January called it unpatchable, which is accurate as far as it goes.

Two caveats that the better reporting included and the viral posts did not.

The provenance and validity of the leaked values were never independently established in that reporting. And more importantly, boot ROM keys by themselves do not give you a kernel escape, a hypervisor bypass, persistent custom firmware or a universal jailbreak. They help researchers inspect early boot code. That is a research advantage, not a jailbreak.

The simplest evidence for that is the calendar. The leak was ten months ago. Firmware 14 has been out for six weeks, and there is still no public way onto it. If boot ROM keys were a jailbreak, we would not be writing this article.

Could that change? Yes, and that is genuinely why this leak matters in the long run. Hardware level compromises tend to pay off slowly and then all at once. But "eventually, maybe" is not a reason to hold a console off the network today.

The Tethered Problem Nobody Mentions

One more thing, because it is the bit that surprises people who get this far.

These jailbreaks are tethered. They do not persist. Every time the console fully powers off, the exploit is gone and you run it again, through the browser, before loading the enabler and starting any homebrew. Rest mode usually preserves a jailbroken state. A cold boot does not.

In practice that is a two minute ritual before you can play anything. It is not hard. It is just the opposite of the thing people imagine when they picture a modded console, which is turning it on and finding your emulators there.

So Who Is This Actually For?

There is a real answer, and it is narrower than the coverage suggests.

A stranded console. A PS5 that was already sitting on an old firmware, with no interest in staying current. Someone with a second console, or one that fell off the network years ago, or a Pro bought used that happened to be behind. For that machine, everything the scene shipped this autumn is pure upside, because there is no PlayStation Network left to lose.

Not your main console. If the PS5 under your television is the one you play new games on, the trade is bad and it gets worse every month. You would be freezing it in October 2026 to run emulators, and the emulators are the part you can get somewhere else.

That is why every piece we write about this ends in the same place. The jailbroken PS5 is a fascinating machine and a genuinely important preservation platform. It is also a machine most readers cannot have, cannot get back to, and would be unwise to create out of a console they still use.

A handheld has none of this. No firmware lottery, no network ultimatum, no re-running an exploit after every power cut, and nothing to lose when an update lands. It is also, inconveniently for the headlines, portable.

The best handhelds for PS2 emulation and the best handhelds for DS and 3DS emulation cover what we actually recommend for the libraries people want this for.

Where We Stop

We cover what these projects are, what they require, and who they suit. We do not publish jailbreak instructions, we do not link to exploit hosts, keys, firmware or game files, and we are not going to tell you which firmware to hold on. That last one in particular is a decision with a permanent consequence attached, and it is yours.

Questions People Ask

Can my PS5 be jailbroken?

Only if it is on firmware 13.60 or lower. Check under Settings, System, System Software, Console Information. If the number starts with 14, there is no public route, and there is no way to downgrade. If it is 13.60 or below, there is a route, and the rest of this article is about what using it costs.

Why can I not downgrade my PS5?

Sony has never shipped a downgrade path, and the console's boot process refuses older system software. This is not a setting or a difficulty level, it is how the machine is built. It is the single most important fact about console modding and the one people learn too late.

What does firmware 14.10 actually block?

PlayStation Network authentication. Sony's servers check the console's version before granting access, and anything older than 14.10 is refused. The console still boots and still plays installed games offline. What it loses is sign in, the store, online multiplayer, cloud saves and everything else that needs the network.

Is the Prolapse jailbreak out?

No. It is reported to work on firmware 14.00 and 14.10, and it is private, with no release announced. Firmware 14.20 on 21 October is reported to have closed the vulnerability. And even a public release would not be enough on its own, because the hypervisor bypass this type of homebrew also needs still does not work past 13.60.

Does the PS5 BootROM leak mean every PS5 will be jailbroken?

Not on any timescale you can plan around. The leaked keys sit in silicon, so no update can revoke them, which is why the coverage called it unpatchable. But they do not provide a kernel escape, a hypervisor bypass or custom firmware by themselves. The leak was at the end of December 2025, and ten months later firmware 14 still has no public route.

Will Sony ban my console for jailbreaking it?

A modified console on 13.60 cannot reach PlayStation Network at all now, which makes the question slightly academic. Historically Sony has acted against accounts and consoles that connect while modified. Running homebrew also breaches the platform's terms of service and may void your warranty.

Do I lose my games if I stay on old firmware?

You keep what is installed and playable offline. You lose the ability to re-download from the store, to install new purchases, and over time to run newer releases at all, because game firmware requirements only go up. That is the cost that grows.

Is it worth jailbreaking a PS5 just for emulation?

For a console you still use, no. You would be trading PlayStation Network and future games for emulators that a handheld runs without any of that. For a console already stranded on an old firmware with nothing to lose, it is one of the most interesting things you can do with hardware you already own.
