Two stories about the PS5 as an emulation box are circulating together, and they are not the same story at all. One runs as native PS5 software. One runs Linux on the console first. One is a week old. One is five months old.
Both need a jailbroken console on old firmware, which is where this piece stops. We cover what these projects are and what they need, not how to get there. We do not cover jailbreaking, and we do not link to keys, firmware or game files.
There is also a third thing underneath both of them that nobody is writing about, and it is the actual reason this is all happening right now. The PS5 homebrew scene got a working Vulkan driver ten days ago.
The Short Version
- Switch emulation on PS5 is native. ProsperoEden is a PS5 port of Eden, which is a Yuzu fork. No Linux layer.
- The coverage is pointing at the wrong repository. The repo every article links to was archived. The active project moved to a new repo on 30 September.
- The "OpenGL only, no Vulkan" line in that coverage is already out of date. As of the release published this morning, Vulkan is the default renderer.
- So treat every frame rate figure you have seen as obsolete. Those numbers came from the OpenGL build. We are not republishing them as current.
- PS3 emulation on PS5 is not new. Digital Foundry tested RPCS3 on a Linux-booted PS5 in May 2026. What is newer is much wider firmware support.
- PS3 emulation on PS5 is also not good, and that is a CPU problem. The bottleneck is Cell SPU emulation on a cut-down Zen 2, and no amount of GPU helps.
- None of this helps handheld owners. A modern x86 handheld is the better RPCS3 machine, for the same reason.
Switch on PS5: ProsperoEden
ProsperoEden is an unofficial PS5 port of Eden, an emulator that is itself a fork of the now defunct Yuzu. The important word is native. It is PS5 homebrew, built with the PS5 Payload SDK, running directly on the console. There is no Linux underneath it and no compatibility layer.
The project is honest about its state. Its own README calls it an early alpha and says video, audio, controller input and saves are confirmed working, then adds that compatibility and performance will vary between games. That is the correct level of confidence for something that is eight days old.
DualSense input works, game audio works, saves work. There is a library view with cover art, a per game Handheld and Docked toggle, a performance overlay on a shortcut, and settings in a single JSON file.
The Coverage Is Linking to an Archived Repository
This is the part worth knowing before you go looking.
Every article published on 28 and 29 September points at ProsperoEden-Legacy. That repository has 183 stars and it is archived. The active project is a new repository created at 02:15 UTC on 30 September, and its first release landed about eighty minutes later.
So the widely shared repo is the old one, and the one with 34 stars is the current one. This is the same trap we keep running into with fast moving projects. Star count measures how long something has been visible, not whether it is the thing you want. The release date and the archive flag are what tell you.
Vulkan Landed This Morning, Which Changes Everything Reported So Far
The press coverage all says the same thing: the PS5 port uses OpenGL and there is no Vulkan renderer. That was true when it was written. It stopped being true a few hours later.
In the release published this morning, Vulkan is the default and recommended renderer. OpenGL is still there as an option in Settings. The Vulkan path runs on Mihawk's PS5 Mesa, a RADV driver for the PS5.
That matters more than it sounds. Eden, like Yuzu before it, is a Vulkan first emulator. Running it through an OpenGL translation was always the compromise. Giving it a real Vulkan driver on the actual hardware is the difference between a proof of concept and something with a future.
It also means every performance number you have read is from the old renderer. We are not going to repeat those figures as if they still describe the software, because they describe a build that is no longer the default. If you want to know how a game runs, the answer today is that nobody has published Vulkan numbers yet.
The Real Story Is the Graphics Stack
Underneath ProsperoEden there is a small pile of projects that all appeared in the last month, and this is the part that will still matter in a year.
| Piece | What it is | Created |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Vulkan (mihawk-99) | A Vulkan 1.4+ native PS5 driver, powered by Mesa RADV, validated by CTS | 20 September 2026 |
| PS5 Mesa (mihawk-99) | The Mesa tree behind that driver | 28 September 2026 |
| ps5-opengl (blackbearreloaded) | OpenGL 4.6 Core for PS5 homebrew, via Mesa and Gallium, with native EGL | 6 September 2026 |
| PS5 Native App Boilerplate | The native app structure, runtime and packaging ProsperoEden is built on | 2026 |
Read those dates again. A console that shipped in 2020 got a CTS validated native Vulkan driver ten days ago. Emulators showing up immediately afterwards is not a coincidence, it is a consequence. Any emulator that targets Vulkan now has a path onto this hardware, and that is a much bigger deal than one Switch port.
What It Requires, and What It Does Not Include
The README is unusually clear on this, and we are going to quote the position rather than paraphrase it. ProsperoEden ships no keys, no firmware, no games and no other copyrighted console data. It tells you to dump those from hardware and software you own, and not to download or redistribute them.
The project also disabled GitHub issues on purpose, specifically so the tracker does not fill up with compatibility reports for commercial games and questions about where to find game files. That is a deliberate stance and a clean one.
Beyond that, it needs a jailbroken PS5, which is the part we are not covering. You supply your own keys, firmware and games, in a folder the console can read, and that is as far as we go.
PS3 on PS5: Real, Older Than You Think, and Not Actually Good
The PS3 half of this works completely differently, and the framing it is getting is wrong twice over.
It is not native. You boot Linux on the jailbroken console and run RPCS3 on top, the same RPCS3 that runs on any PC. There is no PS5 homebrew port of RPCS3, and searching GitHub for one turns up nothing.
And it is not news. Digital Foundry tested this properly back in May 2026. The results have been public for five months.
What Digital Foundry Actually Found
The honest summary is that it works, that it looks lovely when it works, and that the games people actually want are the ones that do not.
- Ridge Racer 7 ran at a stable 60 FPS at 4K with 16x anisotropic filtering, looking better than it ever did on a PS3.
- Heavenly Sword held close to 30 FPS at 5120 by 2880. That is roughly sixteen times the pixel count of its original 720p target.
- The MotorStorm trilogy held up well. The first game ran at 1440p against a 30 FPS target, Pacific Rift managed 4K at 30, and Apocalypse got close to its 30 FPS target once MLAA was turned off.
- GTA IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 were limited by CPU emulation, not by the GPU.
- Killzone 2 struggled, because it leans hard on the Cell's SPUs for animation, AI and post processing.
The diagnostic detail is the useful one. Pushing the output resolution up to 4K barely moved the frame rate. When resolution is free, you are not GPU bound. You are waiting on the CPU.
Why a PS5 Is a Mediocre RPCS3 Machine
RPCS3's hard problem has always been the PS3's Cell processor and its SPUs. Emulating those is the single most demanding thing the software does, and it rewards raw per core performance above everything else.
The PS5 has eight Zen 2 cores and sixteen threads at 3.5 GHz, with the GPU at 2.23 GHz. That GPU is plenty. Those cores are a 2019 design at a fixed console clock, and RPCS3 has spent years getting faster specifically on newer desktop parts with better per core throughput.
So the PS5 ends up as a console that can render PS3 games at resolutions the PS3 never dreamed of, while failing to hit 30 FPS in the ones that lean on the Cell. It is a fascinating result and a poor recommendation.
If you already knew that from our PS3 emulation on handhelds guide, it is the same bottleneck, for exactly the same reason.
The Firmware Situation Is Wider Than Reported
Most coverage says this needs PS5 firmware in the 3.xx or 4.xx range, and concludes that almost nobody qualifies. The project's own documentation says otherwise.
ps5-linux supports the PS5 Phat and Slim on firmware 3.00 through 7.61. M.2 support starts at 4.00. It does not list the PS5 Pro.
The catch is the one that always applies to console homebrew: you cannot downgrade. What matters is not which firmware is supported, it is which firmware your console happens to be sitting on already, and whether you ever let it update.
On top of the console you need a 64GB or larger USB drive to hold Linux, ideally an external SSD, and a USB keyboard and mouse. An M.2 SSD and a Bluetooth dongle for the DualSense are optional. The loader's latest release went out on 5 September 2026.
One Untested Idea Worth Flagging
ps5-linux exposes the console's Blu-ray drive to Linux through a custom AHCI driver. RPCS3 gained the ability to read PS3 games straight from a disc drive earlier this year, which we covered in RPCS3 can now play PS3 discs.
On paper those two facts combine into a PS5 reading your PS3 discs. We have seen nobody demonstrate it, so treat that as an open question rather than a feature. If it has been done, it has not been written up.
What This Means If You Own a Handheld
Bluntly, nothing yet.
None of this software runs on an Anbernic, a Retroid or a Steam Deck. It is PS5 homebrew and PS5 Linux, on a console most people cannot put into that state.
For PS3 specifically, the lesson actually points away from the PS5. If Cell SPU emulation is the wall, then the machine you want is the one with the strongest per core CPU performance you can carry, which is a modern x86 handheld and not a 2019 console APU. Our best handhelds for PS3 emulation guide covers where that line currently sits.
For Switch emulation the same logic holds. An x86 handheld running Eden on desktop drivers is a far less exotic proposition than a jailbroken console running an eight day old port.
Do Not Confuse This With PS5 Emulation
These two get mixed up constantly because the words are the same in a different order.
Emulators running on a PS5 is this article. Old consoles, emulated by software running on Sony's hardware.
Emulating a PS5 is the opposite direction, on a PC, and it barely works. We covered the state of it in two new PS5 emulators are real, including the part where the top Google results for "PS5 emulator" are scams that take your money.
If someone is selling you either one, it is a scam. Everything named in this article is free and open source.
The Bottom Line
The Switch on PS5 story is real, moving daily, and being reported off an archived repository with numbers from a renderer that is no longer the default. Check the release date before you trust any figure attached to it.
The PS3 on PS5 story is real, five months old, and the interesting part is not that it works but why it works unevenly. GPU to spare, CPU to burn.
The part worth actually watching is the Vulkan driver. One Switch port is a headline. A native Vulkan implementation on the PS5 is a platform, and everything else follows from it.
Questions People Ask
Can a PS5 really run Nintendo Switch games?
On a jailbroken console, yes, through ProsperoEden, an unofficial PS5 port of the Eden emulator. It runs as native PS5 homebrew with no Linux layer. It is an early alpha at time of writing, its own documentation says compatibility and performance vary by game, and it requires you to supply your own keys, firmware and games.
Does PS3 emulation on PS5 run natively?
No. Unlike the Switch emulator, there is no native PS5 build of RPCS3. You boot Linux on the jailbroken console and run the normal PC version of RPCS3 on top of it.
Is PS3 emulation on PS5 new?
No. Digital Foundry published a detailed test in May 2026. What has changed since is the Linux loader supporting a much wider range of PS5 firmware than the early coverage suggested.
How well do PS3 games actually run on a PS5?
It depends entirely on how much a game leans on the PS3's Cell SPUs. Digital Foundry found Ridge Racer 7 at a stable 60 FPS at 4K and Heavenly Sword near 30 FPS at 5120 by 2880, while GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2 were held back by CPU emulation. Raising the resolution barely changed frame rates, which is the giveaway that the GPU was never the limit.
Why is the PS5 not better at PS3 emulation than a PC?
Because RPCS3 is bound by Cell SPU emulation, which rewards per core CPU performance. The PS5 has eight Zen 2 cores at a fixed 3.5 GHz, a 2019 design, while RPCS3 has been getting faster specifically on newer desktop CPUs. The PS5's GPU is more than enough, which is why you can raise the resolution for free.
What PS5 firmware do I need?
The Linux loader lists support for the PS5 Phat and Slim on firmware 3.00 through 7.61, with M.2 support from 4.00 onward, and does not list the PS5 Pro. You cannot downgrade a PS5, so the only firmware that matters is the one your console is already on. We do not cover how to jailbreak a console.
Can I do any of this on a Steam Deck or an Anbernic?
No. This is PS5 homebrew and PS5 Linux software. For PS3 emulation on something portable, a modern x86 handheld is actually the better machine, because the bottleneck is per core CPU performance rather than graphics.
Is ProsperoEden legal to download?
The emulator port itself is open source under GPL-3.0 and ships no keys, firmware or games. Its documentation tells you to dump those from hardware you own and not to download or redistribute them. Emulator software is legal; the console modification it requires and the files it needs are separate questions, and we do not cover either.
Which ProsperoEden repository is the current one?
The one created on 30 September 2026. The more widely linked repository, with the higher star count, has been archived, and the coverage published on 28 and 29 September points at it. Check the archive flag and the latest release date rather than the star count.
