Retroid Pocket 4 Pro retro handheld front view

The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is the device that finally makes mid-range retro handhelds competitive with premium options. Running Android 13 on a Dimensity 1100 chip, it tears through everything up to GameCube and PS2 — and it does so in a polished, Switch-like form factor that feels genuinely premium.

✓ Pros

  • Dimensity 1100 handles GameCube, PS2, and Dreamcast excellently
  • Premium build quality — feels like a $200+ device
  • Stunning 4.7" 720p IPS display
  • Full Android 13 — install any emulator or streaming app
  • Hall-effect analog sticks — no drift, ever
  • Excellent D-pad and face buttons
  • Active cooling keeps performance stable under load

✗ Cons

  • Android learning curve for new users
  • Battery life (5-7 hours) is average for the price
  • Heavier than budget alternatives at 260g
  • $190 is a significant investment
  • PS3 and Switch emulation is still limited

Build Quality and Design

The RP4 Pro looks and feels like a premium gaming handheld. The matte plastic body has a satisfying grip texture, the triggers have real travel with a tactile bump, and everything clicks with confidence. It's noticeably nicer in hand than any Anbernic device under $150.

The form factor mirrors the Nintendo Switch Lite — horizontal, two analog sticks in the top-left/bottom-right configuration, full complement of face buttons, four shoulder buttons. The layout is immediately familiar if you've used any modern controller.

At 260g it's the heaviest device in this price range, but the weight distribution is good enough that it doesn't feel tiring during long sessions.

Display

The 4.7" 720p IPS panel is the best screen on any handheld under $250. It's sharp, bright, and covers excellent colour gamut. Retro pixel art looks crisp without any visible artifacts, and 3D games rendered at higher resolutions look genuinely impressive.

Brightness tops out at a level comfortable for outdoor use. The touch screen is a nice bonus for Android navigation and DS emulation.

Emulation Performance

This is where the RP4 Pro separates itself from budget devices. The Dimensity 1100 is a serious processor:

  • Everything up to PS1 — Trivially easy. Perfect performance.
  • N64 — Flawless. Every title, every setting.
  • Dreamcast — Near-perfect. Virtually every game runs at full speed.
  • PSP — Perfect. Every title including demanding 3D games.
  • GameCube — Excellent. The vast majority of the library runs at full speed with Dolphin.
  • PS2 — Very good. Most titles run well; demanding open-world games may need settings tweaks.
  • Wii — Good performance on most titles. Some demanding games need compromise settings.
  • 3DS / DS — Excellent on both Citra and DeSmuME.

Android: Freedom and Flexibility

Running full Android 13 means you can install any emulator from RetroArch to standalone Dolphin, PCSX2, or PPSSPP. You're not locked into the manufacturer's curated experience. You can also install streaming apps (Xbox Game Pass, GeForce NOW), sideload APKs, or use it as a light Android gaming device.

The tradeoff is a steeper learning curve for users new to Android emulation. Retroid provides a clean launcher that makes the experience feel more console-like, but getting everything perfectly configured takes an hour or two.

Final Verdict

The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is the best handheld under $200 if GameCube, PS2, or demanding emulation is your priority. The build quality, display, and performance are all class-leading at the price point. The battery life is its only genuine weakness. If your library tops out at PS1, you're overspending — grab an RG35XX or Miyoo Mini Plus instead. But if you want the full library, this is the device to get.
