shadPS4 v0.17.0 Adds Game Compression, and Handhelds Needed It Most

shadPS4 released v0.17.0 on 31 July 2026, under the codename "Garbage: Collector's Edition." The headline features are ShadNet going live, ZArchive game compression, wider mouse support, and a long list of audio, graphics, and kernel fixes.
Most coverage is leading with the online features. For handheld owners that is the wrong headline. The change that actually alters day to day use is the boring one: you can now compress a game into a single file.
Here is why that matters more than it sounds.
The PS4 Storage Problem Nobody Talks About
PS4 emulation coverage focuses on frame rates, compatibility percentages, and which games are playable. Storage barely comes up, and on a handheld it is the constraint you hit first.
A PS4 game is not a disc image. It ships as a sprawling folder structure that can run to 40, 50, or 100 GB for a single title. Compare that with the systems people usually emulate on handhelds:
| System | Typical game size |
|---|---|
| SNES | Under 4 MB |
| PS1 | 300 to 700 MB |
| Dreamcast | About 1 GB |
| PS2 | Up to 8.5 GB |
| Wii | Up to 4.7 GB |
| PS4 | 40 GB and up |
A 512 GB microSD card that comfortably holds several hundred PS1 and Dreamcast games holds perhaps eight PS4 games. On a Steam Deck where that card is also carrying your Steam library, the practical number is lower still.
Worse, the folder structure means thousands of small files per game, which is slower to copy and harder to manage than a single image.
ZArchive collapses a game into one compressed file. shadPS4 reads from it directly. You get fewer files, less space used, and a library that is actually manageable on a handheld's storage budget.
If you have been treating PS4 emulation as a one game at a time experiment because of space, this is the release that changes that.
ShadNet Went Live, With Limits
We covered ShadNet's announcement when it landed alongside v0.16.0. In v0.17.0 it is actually shipping.
What works today: posting online scores and sharing them with other players. What does not: playing multiplayer games. The release also implemented most of the matchmaking library underneath, including lobbies, rooms, joining, and signaling.
That last part is the interesting bit. Building lobbies and signaling is the hard groundwork that has to exist before real multiplayer can. It suggests the project is serious about this rather than shipping a leaderboard and stopping.
The comparison people keep making is RPCN, the community service that gives RPCS3 users online play for PS3 games. RPCN took years to get where it is. ShadNet is following a recognisable path, and it has nothing to do with PlayStation Network.
The Rest of the Release
- Mouse support improved, which matters for the PS4 games that expect pointer input and for anyone using a Steam Deck trackpad as a stand-in for the DualShock 4 touchpad.
- macOS compatibility and speed improved. Not a handheld story, but it broadens the project's reach.
- Extensive fixes across audio, graphics, and kernel operations, which is where the compatibility gains in any given release usually come from rather than from headline features.
This follows v0.16.0 on 1 June 2026, which brought local multiplayer, a rebuilt configuration system, and initial PlayStation 4 Pro support. Two substantial releases two months apart is a healthy cadence for a project this young.
What It Means If You Own a Handheld
Being honest about the ceiling, because the release notes will not tell you this.
PS4 emulation on a handheld is still a short-session, curated-library activity. As of v0.16.0 the project reported roughly 117 playable titles on Windows and around 150 on Linux. That is a real library now, but it is a fraction of the PS4 catalogue, and playable does not mean smooth on a device drawing 15W.
What v0.17.0 changes is the friction around the games that do work. Compression means you can keep five or six of them installed instead of one. That is the difference between a thing you demo to friends and a thing you actually use.
The devices that can attempt this at all remain x86 only: the Steam Deck OLED, the Lenovo Legion Go S, the GPD Win 4, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, and similar. No Android handheld runs shadPS4 and none will.
If you want to try it, our shadPS4 setup guide covers installation, firmware modules, and settings. Our PS4 emulation status guide has the wider picture.
One Thing Worth Repeating
Download shadPS4 only from shadps4.net or the project's own GitHub releases. Popular emulators attract fake download pages and repackaged builds carrying malware, and shadPS4 is currently one of the most searched emulator names there is. Our how to download emulators safely guide covers what to check.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is in shadPS4 v0.17.0?
ShadNet going live for online score posting, ZArchive game compression, improved mouse support, better macOS compatibility, and a large set of audio, graphics, and kernel fixes. It released on 31 July 2026 under the codename "Garbage: Collector's Edition."
What is ZArchive in shadPS4?
A format that compresses a PS4 game into a single file instead of the folder of thousands of files that PS4 titles normally ship as. shadPS4 reads games directly from it. On a handheld with limited storage this is the most practically useful feature in the release, since PS4 games routinely run to 40 GB or more.
Can you play PS4 games online with shadPS4 now?
Not multiplayer. ShadNet currently supports posting and sharing online scores. The release implemented much of the underlying matchmaking library including lobbies, rooms, joining, and signaling, which is groundwork for future multiplayer rather than a working feature today.
How many PS4 games work in shadPS4?
As of v0.16.0 the project reported roughly 117 playable titles on Windows and around 150 on Linux. The Linux figure being higher is not a mistake, since graphics driver behaviour differs between platforms. Check the compatibility list for your specific game.
Which handhelds can run shadPS4?
Only x86 devices, including the Steam Deck OLED, Lenovo Legion Go S, GPD Win 4 and Win Mini, MSI Claw, and ROG Ally. shadPS4 has no ARM build, so no Android handheld can run it regardless of how powerful it is.
Is shadPS4 worth using on a handheld yet?
For a curated list of playable games and short sessions, yes. It is not a replacement for a PS4 and battery drain is heavy. v0.17.0's compression makes keeping a handful of games installed practical, which is the main thing that was holding handheld use back.
